Alan and Jen Hawker
We give an especially warm welcome this morning to two people who are no strangers to St John's. Alan and Jen have led two housparties for us in years past, and Alan led our houseparty at home here last year. That day helped us develop our Ministry Leadership Team. It is a pleasure to have our Archdeacon to officially open our new kitchen.
A Generous Legacy
You will see in the Lounge (next to the new kitchen) that a plaque has been dedicated to Dr Norah Clarke.Dr Clarke was not only a life-long friend of Andrew and Jean, she was a long-standing friend of St John's. She was a regular supporter of this church, and always visited us when she was in Swindon.
Dr Clarke died in 2008 aged 94 and very kindly left the church a substantial legacy in her will on condition it was not to be used for day-to-day expenditure. PCC has decided to use her gift in two specific ways.
Firstly, to pay for the new kitchen the cost of which was substantially reduced by a very generous donation from another member of the congregation who wished to remain anonymous.
Secondly, this legacy will enable us, in the near future, to purchase a much needed new organ for the church.
A specific gift has also been given for this purpose in memory of Mrs Barbara Franklin. So we give thanks to God for the continuing and great generosity both of our own members and friends from outside the congregation.
Coffee Rota Under Strain
The good news is that we have a wonderful new kitchen. The bad news is that the coffee rota is in danger of collapse. The number of people on the current Rota means that willing volunteers are now doing it too often. And, you can see where that's going to lead...
Now that we have started to serve coffee from the new kitchen, we want to organise the coffee Rota on a different principle.
Firstly, we guarantee not to put anyone on the Rota are more than three times a year. Yes -- that is correct. You will only make coffee once every four months.
Secondly, we will scrap the present rota and draw up a new one starting on June 6.
Hospitality is really important in this church. It gives us a chance to develop relationships with one another, and to welcome new people.
If we are unable to find enough people to serve coffee, there will be some blank weeks. Our hope is that some more of you would be willing to offer, knowing that will not be more than three times a year.
ArcAngel Reopens
The ArcAngel Christian bookshop in Swindon will be reopening on Saturday 15 May at 11:00am with a Thanksgiving ceremony. Having been closed since mid-January 2009 due to a fire, all the rebuilding has now been completed.
ArcAngel stocks a selection of Christian books and Bibles, resource materials, cards, gifts, CDs and DVDs jewellery and fair trade goods. Refreshments will be served throughout the day until 4pm.
