Prayer topics this week

For Fairtrade fortnight - 23rd February - 8th March inclusive. For Living Stones 2, our participation and the development of St. John's ministry.

Revd. Joe Morris

It was with great sadness that we heard of Joe's death in the Prospect Hospice soon after 2pm last Sunday. Joe's valiant fight against cancer ended soon after he took Holy Communion and his passing was very peaceful. Chuck and Kath and other members of the family were with him and said their goodbyes to him, and prayers of commendation were said for him as he went to meet his Lord and Saviour.

Joe has been Assistant Curate at St. John's for only 18 months but has touched the lives of many people in our church during that time. Please continue to pray for Chuck, Kath and Katie, and other members of the family, at this very sad time.

Joe's funeral will be at St. Mary's Church, Great Dunmow at 2:00pm on Saturday 21st March and all are invited to attend. We plan to hold a Service of Thanksgiving for Joe's life in St. John's and will publish details as soon as possible.

The Family Food 'n' Fun evening is CANCELLED

Following Joe's death, we have decided to cancel the entertainment evening planned for next Saturday, 7th March.

Living Stones 2

Living Stones 2 is this coming Saturday, 7th March in church, starting at 9:30am.

This is not just a teaching day. It is a participation day. We need the congregation to be involved in the changes we are considering making in order to develop the ministry of the Church. A number of us have been looking at different models of leadership teams in the area around, and visiting churches to find out more about them. As a result on the day:

Peter Eastwood will be explaining how leadership works at Shirehampton a growing church on the edge of Bristol.

Melanie Griffiths will be talking about Paul Harris' model of leadership in his church in Cheltenham. Some of you will remember Paul leading our house party at Hebron Hall a few years ago.

Finally, Alan Hawker, in addition to his keynote speech, will be explaining the leadership model he used in his church in Crawley. These three growing churches had three different models. We need prayerfully to consider what is the right model for us here at St. John's.

In addition we will be outlining a new initiative which will be launching in partnership with other churches in September called "Growing Leaders".

The day will finish at lunchtime, but, in order to allow people to get away we will not be having lunch together. There is no charge and we would like the whole church to come together for this important morning. Please don't miss it!

Raymond's Installation as Canon

We were delighted to announce two weeks ago that Raymond will be installed as Honorary Canon at Bristol Cathedral at 3:30pm on Saturday, 2nd May, 2009.

We are planning to take members of the congregation by coach to Bristol to support Raymond on his special day. If you would like to be there to see Raymond installed, please sign the coach list on the table in the church foyer. The subsidised coach cost will be £5 per ticket for adults - £3 for children and young people aged 15 and under. BUT HURRY! The coach is filling up!

When we return from Bristol (at about 6:00pm) we will be holding a buffet reception at St. John's to which all members of the church are invited (even if they have been unable to join us in the Cathedral). And the celebrations will continue with an evening of unsurpassed entertainment! The evening is absolutely free and we hope you will put the date in your diary so that you can join us for a great time of fellowship. But we do need to know what numbers to expect for catering purposes, so please sign up on the list on the table in the church foyer.

If you are willing to display your entertainment skills on that evening, Andy Hall, our resident MC will be delighted to hear from you - there's a list for that too!

Luweero

Chris Hawkes and Raymond have just returned from two weeks in Uganda, strengthening and developing our links with Luweero. Here are just some of the highlights.
