Prayer topics this week
Raymond and Chris on their two-week visit to Uganda. All those affected by the cold weather.
J.A.M. in Space 2009
This will take place on Saturday 9th May in St John's Church and we anticipate between 100 and 140 children will attend this annual event. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to spend time with some of the children of Haydon Wick. However, we will need a lot of help to run the day and would ask you to consider if this is something you could do. We will need group leaders and assistants, registration assistants, refreshment organisers, first aid assistants, stage creators, multimedia operator, video camera operator, sound system operator and people to move furniture etc in the church.
If you can help, then please sign up on the list in the entrance hall. If you need more information about what is involved please contact us. Please note, if you have already indicated that you are willing to help then there is no need to sign up on the form.
Off on their travels
Raymond estimates that he and Chris Hawkes will be touching down on the tarmac at Kampala airport some time during the singing of the second hymn at the 9:00am service. Probably the third verse. [Assuming Dave Day started the service on time]. He writes:
"Our visit to Uganda comes in two stages. At the request of the diocese, we will be dividing our time equally between Kampala and Luweero. Kampala is the capital city, and much wealthier than Luweero, even though they are separated by only 45 minutes. We have many contacts in Luweero. In Kampala we have only one and that is the Rev William Kiwanuka whose children we have been supporting in their education for many years.
I have been in touch with the Bishop there, (Bishop Zac) and we hope to be able to meet him and get some guidance from him, so that we can bring back a video record of some of the things Christians are doing in that city. This is not so much for our benefit as a church here in Haydon Wick, but for the diocese and deanery. There is celebration of the 40 year link between Bristol and Uganda in May of this year, and the film will be part of that event.
If we can find an Internet café, I will break the habit of a lifetime and post a blog. You can read it on www.bristol.anglican.org. We will do our best to keep you up to date with all our activities, first in Kampala and then in Luweero."
IMPACT
IMPACT is a Christian worship event bringing together young people from across Swindon. It is an opportunity to creatively explore and discuss life, faith and God with other young people in a chilled out space. A group will be going to IMPACT on the evening of Saturday February 28th [More about this in next week's service].
Leadership and St John's
One of the areas we shall be exploring during our Day Conference on March 7th is the issue of Leadership Teams. In the New Testament, leaders do not function on their own but always as part of a team. There are a number of different versions of leadership teams in our diocese. In almost every case they are operating in churches that are growing. We shall be outlining some of the different models used, so that we can in due course, decide what is best for us here at St John's. We have of course operated a number of different teams over the years, but the congregation has not been much involved in that. This time we want you to know what is going on, and be involved in the decision-making process.
Electoral Roll
The Church Electoral Roll is being revised between Sunday 22nd February and Sunday 12th April. If you are worshipping regularly at St. John's and would like your name included on the roll please ask Sharon Mortimer for an application form.
