Introducing the new Parish Administrator

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Janice Heath as Parish Administrator. Janice, who lives in Greenmeadow, is a member of Emmanuel United Reformed Church and, for the last two years, she has been co-leader of the Emmanuel CAMEO toddler group. Janice holds a European Computer Driving Licence so she is well equipped to deal with Raymond's multimedia and internet demands! Janice, who will initially work in the Parish Office on Wednesday and Friday mornings, takes up her new post on Wednesday, 11th November.

Confirmation Service

Please note that the confirmation service will take place on Sunday, November 15 at 4:00 pm at St Michael's in Highworth.

Important Food Bank dates

There will be a quiz this Friday 13th November to raise funds for the Food Bank and it would be good to see a couple of St Johns teams taking part. So, get your team together and contact Russell Riggs for details.

The next Food Bank food collection will be at Sainsburys at Bridgemead on Saturday 5th December. All help would be very welcome. Please sign up on the sheet provided or talk to Russell about what you could do to help.

Shoebox Sunday

Last year, St. John's sent 176 shoeboxes - a great total but it would be good to reach 200 this year. Shoebox Sunday is next Sunday and they all have to be back by then. As last year, we are planning to finish the 11am service on Shoebox Sunday by forming a human chain to start the boxes on their long journey. Put it in your diary now to avoid being the 'weakest (or missing) link'! More information is available from Jean Dean.

Jar of grace

If you haven't yet started your Jar of Grace, it's still not too late! Your thank offerings at meal times, between now and Christmas, will be shared between Luweero and UNICEF's life saving work for the world's children. Last year we received 88 Jars and set a new record of £2,591! Can we better that this year? You can either pick up a Jar in church (there are still one or two left) or use one of your own (but do please clean it first - marmalade makes the money sticky and difficult to count!), For more information, please speak to our Treasurer, Andrew.

St. John's Christmas lunch

This year's Seniors' Christmas Lunch is being held at the Haydon Centre on Saturday 5th December from 12:30 to 2:30pm. All the invitations have now been sent out, so if you haven't received one and would like one, please add your name to the list in the back of church, or contact Sharon Mortimer.

Also, if you are able to help out on the day please contact Sharon. She would love to hear from you.

Mary Southgate & Carol Nichol are organising the food and Sharon Mortimer & Julie Hayward are organising the transport. If you are able to help with any of this please give them a ring or see them in church.

"Come to the River" – February 2010

We have had an encouraging number of people sign up for the St John's Houseparty. We would really love to see you there. Not only would you gain from it personally; so would the church by having you there.

Those who had to sleep in a dormitory at Hebron Hall in 1997 now know what it is like to do 'porridge'! Lindors, on the other hand, closes down during the summer for Christian conferences, and operates during the high season as a country house hotel.

A number of you have asked for en suite accommodation. All rooms are en suite, as a matter of course. However, as comfortable as the accommodation is, that is not the reason we're going.

Martin Cavender's words meant a lot to those who heard him speak in St John's last year, and he will bring a word from God for us again in February, both as individuals and as a church. We really do want you to be there to hear it.

Meeting for prayer

Certain aspects of the Christian life are more demanding than others. Intercessory prayer is probably the most demanding of all. Delia Smith, the Christian cook, recently commented that she prays for an hour every day, and has never felt like doing it! Prayer is work, and it is a battle.

On Tuesday at 7:45pm we are inviting all home groups to come together, and members of the church not in a home group, so that we can get down to the serious business of prayer. The Bible teaches us that prayer is the way God changes things. That is basically an issue of faith. Home groups will not be meeting during that week to emphasise the importance we are giving to this.

Communion at James Wilks House

There will be a service of Holy Communion at James Wilks House on Thursday 12th November at 2.30pm. All are very welcome.

Pram Club glass mugs missing

Some of the pram club glass mugs have disappeared. If you have borrowed them please would you return them to the Church kitchen cupboard.

Parish Office

The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. Please provide all items for the bulletin in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
