Prayer topics this week
For the PCC as they meet on Monday and the decisions they make. Continued growth at St. John's.
Peter and Sally Bartlett
We begin 2009 by looking outwards. Sandra Tebbutt helped us develop our link with Albania two weeks ago. Raymond and Chris leave for Uganda on February 8th. Today we are delighted to have Peter and Sally Bartlett who are going next month to Paraguay where Peter will become Bishop on March 29th. Our partnership with the South American Mission Society is long-standing, but in comparison with Uganda, we know very little about what goes on there. This is partly because we have no personal contacts. That will change today.
First Alpha Course of 2009
Our last Alpha course finished just before Christmas. However, we have high hopes of starting another as soon as Raymond gets back from Uganda. If you are interested in learning more about that, please let Raymond know, contact Wendy at the parish office. A number of people have already expressed interest. We would love to hear from you.
Reading the lesson well
Raymond received enthusiastic feedback from those who came to the last training evening for lesson readers. Reading the lesson well matters. It is a vital preparation for the sermon. If you read in a way which holds the attention of the congregation, it makes the preacher's task much easier. Another training evening will take place this Thursday at 7:45pm in church.
Equipped to Grow
First of all, it is such an encouragement that we have a Bishop who chooses that title for a day conference. Bishop Mike and Bishop Lee long to see the kingdom expand and churches grow. It was wonderful to see so many people from St. John's last weekend at St Joseph's School. Thank you for giving up your Saturday morning. We have reserved a table at Manor Farm on Sunday, February 1st at 1:00pm for those who attended, to discuss what we learnt.
Service of Prayer for the Week Of Christian Unity
Although the clergy in this area meet regularly for prayer, there really is not that much contact between members of our various churches. In this, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, there is a service in St Andrews Methodist Church on Whitworth Road at 6:00pm. this evening.
Still more!
Jars of Grace are still coming in. So far this year we have received 83 Jars and gifts totalling a record £2,490 (just £10 short of our target!). Every penny given will be donated to the UNICEF Education Project and Luweero. So if you haven't yet brought back your Jar, please do so as soon as possible. And if you didn't use a Jar of Grace, you can still give by cash, or by cheque payable to St. John's PCC. Simply put your gift in an envelope marked 'Jar of Grace' and pass it to our Treasurer, Andrew.
Busy Line!
Jean Dean, Prayer Circle Co-ordinator, reports that there were 72 requests for prayer on the Prayer Circle in 2008. Thank you to all those who are on the Prayer Circle for their faithful prayer support. The St. John's Prayer Circle exists to mobilise prayer quickly in the church, especially in urgent and emergency situations. Anyone who wishes to be part of the Prayer Circle and give prayer support to those in special need should contact Jean.

The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
