Jam in Space – for the leaders, helpers and those taking part. The APCM and the church year ahead.
Jam in Space
On Saturday, 9th May at 10:30am a rocket will blast off from St John's, Haydon Wick to travel 13 million light years for the Emperor of the Universe's Birthday Bash. This is one of exactly 100 ships taking part in the Great Birthday Procession. It is a tremendous honour. However, the ship is being piloted by the members of Jam Spread so I have a feeling something might just go wrong. It will be great fun - with lots of water and custard pies. But most importantly, there is a scriptural message. There should be 100 spaceships in the birthday procession, but if one were to get lost in space, there would only be 99. What would happen then? Please encourage your children to bring a friend along from school. It is guaranteed that they will enjoy it, learn something of Jesus and His love for them, and take away some fantastic craft work.
Chair moving: last year we cleared the furniture in an amazingly short time on the Friday evening before Jam because so many people turned up to help. With a similar number this year, we hope to do it just as quickly. But we do need you to come along and give us a hand. Please be in church by 7:00pm on Friday 8th May and make a tough job easier.
Getting ready: and a reminder to all those involved in Jam in Space itself, we would like you to be in church on Saturday 9th May by 9:15am.
Request for lights: can anyone supply any flashing or static lights (possibly Christmas lights) for JAM? If you can help, please see Janet Gash.
The Annual Parochial Church Meeting
We will be doing six things:
- Worshipping and praying
- Reviewing the Year 2008/9
- Electing PCC Members to Serve for the Coming Three Years
- Explaining the Plans We Have Drawn up for the Proposed Kitchen Project
- Outlining the Way in Which the Living Stones Project Is Likely to Develop
- Unveiling A New Initiative for the Autumn
All of these issues are important, and if you are a member of this church, they involve you. Please don't think that the APCM is only for those who have been members for at least 20 years. More recent members are especially welcome. After all this meeting affects:
Your money: If you are a regular contributor to the church, then you will want to know how PCC spent the money you gave last year, and how it intends to spend it next year.
Your building: The plans for the kitchen are very far reaching. This is a lot more than just a few new cupboards. Many of you have voiced your disappointment with the present kitchen, so we hope that the plans which we have come up with will meet with your approval. However, you need to tell us whether you approve or disapprove.
Your leaders: St John's is a growing church, and needs a leadership structure which can cope with that growth in many different areas in the church's life. So, the APCM is not about St John's as "it", but St John's as "us".
The Electoral Roll
The Electoral Roll for 2009 is now on display in the lobby. Please can you check your entry carefully and inform Sharon Mortimer of any errors. You will notice that we are not displaying phone numbers this year, so if your phone number has changed in the last twelve months please let Sharon know so that she can keep the official copy updated.
Next weekend
Raymond and Alison would like to say a very warm "thank you" to those of you who have given up your Saturday afternoon to come on the coach to Bristol Cathedral. They really appreciate your being there. And of course, you don't need to have been to Bristol to enjoy the evening of food and entertainment that will follow. That is open to everybody. (There are still 5 seats remaining on the coach).
Gardening
We are going to plant new shrubs in the corner opposite Morrisons and plan to do the work on Saturday 16th May or 23rd May. We need strong helpers who can do some heavy digging and help with planting. No gardening experience required just strong backs and muscles. If you can help please sign up on the list on the entrance table or see Janet Gash.
Ugandan bags for sale
A few people have already got in early and bought some of the bags Raymond has been using for visual aids recently. But more are available to purchase at very reasonable prices in the foyer. All the money will go to the bag makers who made them. They are just the thing to carry your shopping home from the supermarket!
How should we react in a political and economic crisis?
In the Old Testament Ruth had to learn - fast. Home-groups will be starting a new series this week - it really is a tale for our times.
Moonwalk
Jill Crowhurst is taking part in the Moonwalk in London (a walking marathon) for Breast Cancer on Saturday 16th May. Sponsors would be gratefully received. The sponsor form is on the table in the foyer.
Parish Office
The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
