The Good Old Days Revisited

Raymond is being installed as Honorary Canon at Bristol Cathedral at 3:30pm on Saturday, 2nd May. After that, by popular demand, he is going to perform his Amazing Memory Trick at the Entertainment Evening. If that completely flops, there are other culinary, musical, comical and terpsichorian delights for your communal delectation. If you have an act, Andy Hall, our resident MC, will be delighted to hear from you. Don't be shy.

Renewal of Giving – urgent request

Please return any outstanding Promise Cards urgently to our Treasurer, Andrew Dean.

Report and Accounts 2008

At its meeting on 23rd March, PCC approved and adopted the Report and Financial Statements for 2008. A copy can be viewed on the noticeboard and if you would like to have your own copy to study before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Monday 27th April, please have a word with our Treasurer, Andrew and he will be happy to supply one.

Gifts in memory of Joe Morris

Donations for Interserve, in memory of Joe, received at St. John's have so far totalled £600. Any further donations should be passed to our Treasurer, Andrew, as soon as possible. Cheques should be made payable to St. John's PCC.

How does the Church of England Work?

Someone who has just joined our electoral roll, asked me how the Church of England organises itself. She also wondered where the PCC fits in. The Church of England operates what is called synodical government. A synod is a group of people gathering together.

General Synod makes the big decisions affecting the national church. This is the body that decided that women should be ordained as priests.

Diocesan Synod is the body which governs the life of the Bristol Diocese. When we became a new parish, for example, this was agreed by Diocesan Synod.

Deanery Synod does not have any real power as such, but acts as an intermediary between individual churches and the diocese of Bristol. Our deanery is the town of Swindon, with Purton, Wroughton and Highworth. In the future, Bishop Mike is very keen to give considerably more power and more decision-making responsibility to the individual deaneries so Deanery Synod will be more influential.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is part of the synodical government system, and makes decisions about the church and parish of Haydon Wick. It is the only body which can decide where our church finances are to be spent, and is legally the executive body of the church. PCC decisions over the years have shaped the life, worship and witness of this church. Had PCC made different decisions, you would now be sitting in a very different kind of church, both physically and spiritually.

Each year, we elect members to the Deanery Synod and PCC at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM).

IMPACT

IMPACT is an opportunity to creatively explore and discuss life, faith and God with other young people in a chilled out space. A group from St. John's went to this in February and enjoyed it so much they want to go again. It's on Saturday April 25th - 7:00pm at Citifaith church. If anyone aged 11-18 would like to come along, please contact Anna Hedley or Karen Madni for more information or see the IMPACT website.
