HandsPrayer topics this week

Our Christian witness in the community. Those impacted by the global credit crunch. Christian Missionaries working all over the world.

Swindon Foodbank

As you may have read in the Evening Advertiser, Swindon Food Bank is facing a very difficult financial problem due, in large part, to the loss of their van sponsor. For those who wish to help the Food Bank financially at this time, there will be a retiring offering today, and next Sunday after both services. Gifts can also be passed to our treasurer, Andrew, in envelopes marked 'Swindon Food Bank'. Cheques should be made payable to St. John's PCC.

Carol singing

Please come along for some singing of carols at Asda Walmart on Wednesday, 10th December at 7.30pm. It is organised by the members of the Retail Chaplaincy Team. It will last no longer than 45 minutes.

Christingle

This afternoon we expect our usual large number of visitors to the Christingle service. Despite the printing firm we were using to do the publicity for all our Christmas services going out of business halfway through our order, we were able to distribute the leaflets to the children through the schools.

Christmas Card exchange

The Christmas Card Sorting Office, for the exchange of cards between members, opens for business from today in the old vestry. It should only be used for cards for members who you confidently expect to be in church between now and Sunday, 28th December. Send the others by post or by Scout mail! Please ensure that each card is clearly marked with the surname of the intended recipient. We regret that we cannot take responsibility to deliver cards which have not been collected or claimed by Sunday, 4th January, 2009 when the boxes will be put away, and the Sorting Office closed, for another year.

Christmas Alpha

Please pray this will be a Christmas with a difference for many people who come. We intend to show a few minutes of Nicky Gumbel's talk "Christianity, dull, boring and irrelevant?" at our Christmas services. The plan is then to show the full DVD in early January, and invite people to hear the rest of it. Pray that people will fill in a response card, and come to hear the full talk in January.

Remembering the past - blessing the future

Earlier this year we announced the setting up of the St. John's Memorial Fund to be used to further and assist ministry within the parish, and not for the general running or maintenance expenditure which we meet from the regular offerings of our members. Our PCC has published a leaflet that describes how the Fund will be financed and explains the introduction of memorial plaques, to be affixed to chairs, as a tangible way in which gifts to the Fund, in memory of a loved one, can be marked. You can pick up a copy of the leaflet today from the small display table just outside the main doors to the worship area.

Christmas Flowers

Today is the last day for donations to be passed to Andrew as contributions towards the cost of flowers to decorate St. John's over Christmas. If your donation is to mark a special occasion or is in memory of a loved one, we will note this in the Christmas Bulletin on Sunday 21st December if you will let Andrew have a note in writing with your donation.

Do you buy on line?

We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.

There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!

Tape Ministry

If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
