Prayer topics this week
For each member of the PCC as they meet on Monday. For the safety of children as they start the summer holidays. For safety in our travels, by road, sea or air.
Helping to support two orphans
As we reported in the bulletin last week the Reverend William Kiwanuka, whose children's education we are paying for, has recently taken responsibility for two orphans.
This news has come from Frances David. She has not said under what circumstances these children have been orphaned, but we can guess that AIDS is the likely reason. In any case, William is a poor man, and cannot afford extra mouths to feed.
Raymond asked how we could support them, and Frances recommends that we send out £100 which will enable William and Robinah to look after the extra children.
If we get more donations, we will hold any extra over until another time and send them out later on. Frances does not recommend sending more, because that amount of money will go a long way towards the upkeep of two children in Uganda.
German visitors
A group of German visitors from Salzgitter will be coming to spend six days with us in October this year from Thursday 17th - Wednesday 23rd. We would love to be able put them up in homes across Swindon. If you could put up a couple or a single person for that time, Raymond would love to hear from you. You do not need to speak German or do much in the way of entertaining them.
Bristol Cathedral
Raymond has been asked to put up a display in Bristol Cathedral outlining the work which has been done to provide a school in the parish of Bwaziba, in the diocese of Luweero.
We have provided the finance, but the local people have provided the initiative, energy, and above all, the voluntary labour. We have lots of pictures, both recently and from previous years showing how the school was built room by room. When it comes down from the cathedral, we will put it on our own noticeboard for you to see.
The children over the summer
The adult sermons will be covering some of Paul's sporting metaphors, The children will be looking at another famous athlete in the Old Testament - Goliath. Using the Veggie Tales video, Dave and the Giant Pickle they will look at that story with:
July 27th - Ruth Richardson & Louise Burrows
August 14th - Chuck and Kath Morris
August 28th - Nigel Crowhurst and Janet Gash
This will be an all-age very informal group of whatever children are present.
Houseparty 2009
At our last PCC meeting we decided that it is time for us to restore the tradition of a church Parish Weekend. For many years members of St. John's went to Hebron Hall near Cardiff. However, although this dormitory based accommodation was very suitable in the days when we had a number of large families, the make-up of our present congregation means that it is not suitable. Therefore we have decided to go to Lindors Christian Conference Centre. Lindors is a charming 19th century property situated in the Welsh borders between Monmouth and Chepstow. The weekend will be led by Martin and Cesca Cavender, whom you will be delighted, we are sure, to see again. Dates to be confirmed.
Can you help pram club?
Pram Club, who meet on a Monday need a little help with making coffee/tea and some tidying of toys, just once a month from September. They meet from 9:30 to 11:30am and 1:30pm to 3:30pm. If you can help in any way, please get in touch with Lynda.
Church picnic
There will be a picnic in Lydiard Park (weather permitting) after the 11 o'clock service on Sunday 17th August. Everyone is welcome. Just bring your own food and drink and we'll all meet together in the large field. The more the merrier. If people want to bring bats and balls etc we could play rounders or something similar. It's a few weeks away but people will be starting to go on holiday, so please put the date in your diary now.
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
