For those of you who were able to attend St John’s on 4th August you will have heard Daniel preach, who Simon described as “part of the fruit of the Welcome Course.”
UKHK is a project run by Welcome Churches, a charity, and was supported by the Government’s Levelling Up Scheme. It is intended to aid Hongkongers to settle in the UK. St John’s has run
four Welcome Courses so far and 133 HKers had attended, covering such topics as Exploring British Culture, Wellbeing, Volunteering and Problem Solving.
The sessions are run over seven weeks, with short professionally-made video topics, discussion groups and quizzes, giving people a chance to ask questions and discuss video content. Each session finishes with a lunch to aid the forming of friendships and allowing cross-cultural meal sharing!
From these Welcome Courses, four groups have flourished; a fortnightly Drop In, a Gardening Group, a Tai Chi group and pre-baptism course in Cantonese. See the photos in the bulletin.
The Welcome Courses are fun as well as informative and have created some lasting friendships, HK to HK and HK to Brits! Everyone on the team is a volunteer, and it is ably administered by Charmain. A fifth Welcome Course is in the pipeline and if anyone is interested in joining us to run a discussion group, do speak to Charmain or Carol please.
