Psalm 49 was written by a group of people called the ‘Sons of Korah’. The S of K have an interesting family history! You can read about Korah in the book of Numbers in the Old Testament. Korah led a rebellion against Moses and faced God’s judgement [Numbers 16], yet here we see his ancestors writing praise and worship songs for use in Temple worship! All of us at one level have difficult backstory’s but because of Jesus our pasts have been forgiven, and we can move forward in confidence that we are loved and held in God’s love.
The psalm is a reminder that riches and wealth cannot secure eternal life. Those who put their trust in riches cannot avoid the inevitable. It reminds me of the Parable of the Rich Fool that Jesus tells (Luke 12).
In verse 8 the psalmist makes a statement which says that it’s too costly to set a soul free, the price is just too high. The word ‘ransom’ has the idea of ‘buying back’ someone held in captivity. Of course, there was someone who paid the ultimate price to set us free – and that’s the Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 2.5).
If we belong to Jesus, we have been set free – let’s live in the light of what Jesus has done for us.
