During Welcome Course 4 many people expressed interest in learning about gardening, as they had recently moved into new houses with gardens and didn’t know how to take care of them. Fortunately, John has many years of gardening experience and last Monday he kindly stepped up to run a gardening session at St John’s.
Lots of queries were answered by John and he also brought some seedlings to share – tomatoes, peppers, cosmos and marigold. Many Hong Kongers are city people and have no experience in gardening, so they were thrilled to adopt some plants, hoping they wouldn’t kill them by overwatering or have them eaten by slugs!
Janet gave a tour of the church garden and it was amazing how many different plant species we have at St John’s.
Before the gardening session there was a Tai Chi class, so it was a busy morning! Pamela from Welcome Course 4, who now attends the 11am service, guided the Tai Chi. For many it was their first time, although Charmain said it reminded her of her late grandad who required her and cousins to do Tai Chi every day at 6am during the summer holidays! That was a big challenge, especially as they stayed up late each night to watch TV with grandma! Bitter-sweet childhood memories.
More than twenty people took part in the Tai Chi and gardening. The invitation was opened to all previous Welcome Course participants and some even brought new friends. If you’d like to learn more about Tai Chi, please feel free to reach out to Pamela or Charmain.
