On these pages you will find access to each of the songs we are singing this year, also instructions and further info.
Information about each song
This is a terrific song, new to St John’s and the one that will most benefit from preparation ahead. It is in a solo/backing choir style. Tomi will be our soloist here. There is a YouTube recording in the folder. Please listen to it plenty to get the feel of the song and to learn the tune of the choir part. There is sheet music for those who would like it, but I suggest for most people the lyric sheet will help you sing along to the recording. This has very clear directions about which words are Tomi’s and which are the choir’s.
What about harmony? Most people, men and women, will sing the tune that they hear. If you like to do harmony, that would be really great too. If this is you, practise picking out a harmony line in the choir part.
Obviously, we do not have the mass resources on the recording, but then we are filing a small church, not a huge stadium. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do.
This is a lovely Nick and Becky Drake song that we did use in the recorded services around Christmas last year a couple of times.
It has 4 verses that could be sung by soloists or parts of the choir or everybody. There is a simple chorus with 3 part harmony, with words that sometimes change. In the resources folder there is sheet music if you like it, a lyrics sheet and various backing tracks. It would be good to have some people singing top, middle and bottom harmony. For preparation, I suggest you use the lyrics sheet and try singing along to one of the harmony versions. Men may prefer to sing the bottom part.
We have sung this in the choir before and it is simple but effective. It has 2 melodies which are sung on their own and then the choir splits and sings them both at the same time. There is sheet music in the folder and a learning track with the very simple lyrics too. When you have learned the melody you can try the advanced learning track if you want, or leave that till after we have started rehearsing.
