Gambling may be entertainment to some. But it can quickly become a severe addiction, causing misery. Last week, Peers in the House of Lords considered an amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill tabled by the Bishop of St Albans. He wants to reduce the number of Fixed-Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) present on the high street. Just as importantly, he wants to reduce the amount which can be staked at one go from £100 to £2. The government is currently consulting on gaming machines and gambling advertising. Please pray for change. Paul reminds us in today’s reading that “those who desire to get rich pierce themselves with many griefs.” We might well add “themselves and their families.”
