A big change

We received the news last Monday that Mike and Jane Haslam will both be leaving Swindon at the end of the year. Jane is vicar of Purton, and Mike is currently vicar of North Swindon. We haven't anything to do with Purton, but North Swindon is right next door.

How will this affect us? The whole issue of the parish boundaries will certainly need to be considered. St John's is effectively cut off from the whole of the Northern development. To be able to do something about that can only be a good thing.

On the other hand, the deanery will need to sustain a ministry in a large area, until a new vicar arrives. North Swindon has two small congregations but generates a lot of weddings and requests for baptisms. The arrival of a new vicar could well be some time away. What kind of team will he/she join? These questions will take some time to consider.

Esther Nakamya

Esther is the teacher you will have seen on the Uganda DVD playing goal ball. Some church members are sponsoring Esther's university education. (You may recall Raymond saying earlier in the year that her sponsorship had failed owing to the death of one of her main sponsors.) The blind school continues to educate children for life in Uganda, and you will see on the screen this morning three more children whom we are supporting. They had not arrived back from holiday whilst Raymond and Chris were there.

Harvest Sunday – Sunday 11th October

For some time we have been looking at the issue of leadership in St John's under the banner Living Stones. PCC has agreed to form a ministry leadership team consisting of Raymond, the two churchwardens, and four other members of the church. They will meet together on a regular basis in much the same way as the old staff meeting did. You will hear much more about this between now and harvest.

Right now we want you to once again Save the Day. The day we'd like you to save is Harvest Sunday at 6:00pm. There will be a meeting in church for us to pray about the membership of this group. This is one of those things which we really want to seek the help of the Holy Spirit, so please make it a priority.

Dave Day's farewell

Don't forget on that same day, David and Liz will be coming back at 12 noon so that we can say goodbye to them properly. And, of course give them a farewell gift. If you would like to contribute to that gift, please see Lynda Page at 9:00am or Rod Mortimer at 11:00am. Dave has been with us for thirteen years, and we want to give him a proper send off as he leaves us to go to Wichelstowe. If anyone is able to provide a cake for that, do please sign the list in the foyer.

Swindon Youth for Christ: Showcase and Commissioning

On Thursday 22nd October at 7:30pm at Swindon Academy, Headlands Grove, Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, will be hosting an evening of entertainment, videos, stories, music, interviews and an opportunity to meet the new Swindon Youth for Christ Team. And of course, to pray for the work. Worship will be led by young people from the Impact worship group.
