Prayer topics this week
For the pastoral care, welcome and prayer ministry teams as they begin their work. A right response to international terrorism.
Growing Leaders
You will have heard us talking about the Growing Leaders course over the last few months. This course has been produced by the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS), in response to the need from churches nationwide for leaders. We are delighted to have Charles Burgess from CPAS with us this morning, in order to explain what Growing Leaders is about. Charles visited us a few weeks ago and talked to PCC members about the course. We were inspired enough to make plans to launch our first one, along with St John's in Wroughton at the end of September. Today you have an opportunity to hear more about this course.
Summer holiday themes
You may remember that we took as our theme on Easter Day part of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We didn't look at the obvious account of the death of Aslan but rather at Lucy's rollercoaster of emotions as she discovered the way into Narnia through the wardrobe, only to find everyone thought she was mad. Just like Mary Magdalene. Over the summer we will be looking at Edmund’s experiences in Narnia as he falls under the spell of the White Witch. It is a gripping story of temptation, failure and restoration. Just like ours!
Just one more!
Thank you so much to those who have responded to the request for more help with counting the offerings on Sundays after the 11am service. If we get just one more volunteer, those on the rota will only have to count (in pairs) once every seven weeks. This is the last call as the rota will be prepared, for the last four months of the year, at the end of this week. So if you can help, or would like more information about what is involved, please speak to our treasurer, Andrew.
Rota matters
You will find we have produced a revised rota for the last week of July and August. Please note any changes there. We do apologise if this has inconvenienced those of you who might have been available to read or prayer etc on the original rota, but are now unavailable.
We always ask you to arrange your own swaps if you cannot do the reading or prayer or sides person duty etc, that you have been put down for. Unfortunately, there are over 500 different roles taken in any four-month period, and if Wendy deals with even a third of those, it will take a huge amount of her time. Also, it is much easier for you to agree a swap with another as you can agree which dates you can do for each other.
Now I’ve heard everything!
Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist leaders will attempt to convert non-believers in a Turkish TV game show designed 'to turn disbelievers to God'. An eight-strong theological team will vet entrants to ensure they are genuine non-believers. Those whose religious transformation is sincere will win a pilgrimage to the spiritual home of their new faith. Muslims will visit Mecca, Christians and Jews will go to Jerusalem and Buddhists will travel to Tibet. You will be relieved to know that PCC has no plans to offer holidays to Canterbury as part of the next Alpha course.
Church picnic
There will be a picnic in Lydiard Park (weather permitting) after the 11 o'clock service on Sunday 16th August (please note new date). Everyone is welcome. Just bring your own food and drink and we'll all meet together in the large field. The more the merrier. If people want to bring bats and balls etc we could play rounders or something similar. It's a few weeks away but people will be starting to go on holiday, so please put the date in your diary now.
Food bank update
The next food bank collection is at Tesco Ocotal Way on Saturday 25th July from 9:30am to 4:00pm. This is our first collection here so a big team would be much appreciated. Please put your name down on the sheet in the foyer if you can spare an hour or two.
A big thank you to all who have given cash or pledges towards the Coast to Coast cycle challenge. Richard and Tom are hoping to do 140 miles, back tyre in the Irish Sea and front tyre in the North Sea over 3 days, rising and falling over 2,000 feet, mostly on road. Your support is greatly appreciated. If you missed Russell Riggs last week, you can catch him today after the service or Brian Crookes who has sponsor forms.
Quiz evening - Saturday 12th September
We are planning a Quiz Evening for later this year, so mark this date on your calendar. This will be something anyone and everyone can take part in and is suitable for all ages. We will accommodate those in teams and those who want to make up a team; the first-timers and the old hands; the brainy and the barmy! More details after the summer.
New church visual system
You will see some changes over the next few months in the way we present our songs and especially our all-age services. A big "thank you" to Tony Mann who has once again taken the initiative and brought St John's up to speed with the latest technology. Some training for laptop operators will probably be required before too long.
Puddings galore!
Patti Tomlinson is organising another Puddings Galore! This will be at Patti's house, where she will serve 10 desserts as well as fresh fruit and cheese, from which each ticket holder can choose 5, as well as dessert wine and coffee. Tickets for the event, which is on July 25th from 7:30pm onwards, cost £5.50, and £5 per ticket will be donated to the St. John's Development Fund. For tickets, see Patti after the 9:00am service.
Parish Office
The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
