Prayer topics this week
Safety for our troops in Afghanistan following the latest military operation. For all employees and volunteers at our local hospital, nursing homes and hospices. Increased integrity in Parliament and public life.
The Armour of God
"We do not fight against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities in the spiritual realm".
Because we believe that to be true, we continually emphasise the importance of prayer in the daily life of church members, and in the corporate life of the congregation. We are designating two evenings next week, Tuesday and Thursday, to be evenings of prayer, when we can come together and intercede for our church, town, nation and world.
The film "Oh what a lovely war" contained many of the songs sung by the troops during the First World War. However, for all those troops there came a time when the singing had to stop and that fighting had to begin. Whilst worship is not always easy, intercessory prayer is hard work. But as Paul says to the Christians of his day, "Put on the full armour of God, and stand fast". We meet together at 7:45 p.m.
It could be you!
We are delighted to have so many people involved in services in St John's on Sunday mornings. Church members welcome people, lead the prayers, read the lesson, count the money, make the coffee, teach the children etc. However, there are a number of occasions when those leading the service are expecting someone to come forward to read, pray or be otherwise involved and they don't appear. We have a board near the front door which will help remind church members of the various tasks people are doing this week and next week. So please put the dates you are on the rota in your diary, and check if it really is you!
Getting things together
A number of meetings will be held over the next couple of weeks, in order to finalise some groups that we have been considering for some time.
- Pastoral Care Team - Tues 7th July in the Quiet Room
- Welcome Team - Mon 13th July in the Quiet Room
- Prayer Ministry Team - Wed 15th July in the Quiet Room
- Babies and Toddlers - Thurs 16th July at Furlong Close
If you have expressed an interest in any of these things by putting your name in the red box, you should by now have received a letter from Wendy.

Supermarket collection: The FIRST EVER Tesco Foodbank collection in Swindon is being held at the Ocotal Way Store on Saturday 25th July. There will be a form on the table in the foyer nearer the time for people to put their names on to help.
The T-loop system
After Raymond's request last week for people to let him know the T-loop system was working or not, no problems were reported. This might mean that it was working perfectly. Or it might mean that there was no one with a hearing aid in church last Sunday! It’s hard to say. So, he is putting out the message again. Those using a hearing aid should be able to hear everyone leading the service clearly. If not, do let one of the church wardens know.
Archdeacon's inspection
Alan Hawker will be coming on his triennial inspection of St John's on Wednesday. He has to ensure that we are maintaining our building properly, as well as our valuables, our financial accounting and our records. The outside area of the church will create a marvellous first impression.
Parish Office
The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.

Tape Ministry
If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
