Prayer topics this week

For the partnership between schools and churches around Swindon.

The Welcome Team

As mentioned in last week's bulletin, we want finally to settle some groups that we have been considering for a while. The Welcome Team is a pressing issue, and we ask you to read the accompanying leaflet so that you know what it is all about. The Prayer Ministry Team leaflet will be following this.

From the PCC

PCC is engaging with some of the issues that arose out of the Living Stones 2 conference with the Archdeacon a few weeks ago. They are reading a booklet on Leadership Ministry Teams, and they shall be discussing questions that arise out of that when they next meet. At the conference we looked at the Shirehampton model and at a model from Cheltenham. But what we need to create is the St. John's Haydon Wick model. That has got to be based on who we are, where we are, and where we believe God wants us to go.

Vergers' duties at 9:00am

For a number of years Peter Howlett has very kindly prepared for the 9:00am Sunday services on Saturdays. We now have a full team of vergers in place, who are willing to do that. From the first week of June, our vergers will assume responsibility for the preparation for our first service on Sundays, following the checklist that Wendy has sent out. That gives us a couple of weeks to make sure that the checklist is accurate, that everybody knows what they have to do, and that everybody knows where everything is. Many thanks to those vergers who will now be setting their alarm clocks a little bit earlier on a Sunday morning.

The kitchen project

The kitchen project continues to develop. As Pauline pointed out at the APCM, this will give us a number of opportunities to do things differently including possibly even serving coffee in a different place.

The stepladder to the attic above the creche

One of our newer members almost lost a finger on this ladder recently. PCC will be replacing it very soon. It is very important that people do not use this ladder, because at a certain point it clicks together, and can trap your hand.

The church

Raymond mentioned in last week's sermon the passage from Courageous Leadership by Bill Hybel's, which Martin Cavender used when he was with us. If you need some inspiration, here it is again.

"There is nothing like the local church when it is working right. Its beauty is indescribable. Its power is breathtaking. Its potential is unlimited. It comforts the grieving and heals the broken in the context of community. It builds bridges to seekers and offers truth to the confused. It provides resources for those in need and opens its arms to the forgotten, the downtrodden and the disillusioned. It breaks the chains of addictions, frees the oppressed and offers belonging to the marginalised of this world. Whatever the capacity for human suffering the church has a greater capacity for healing and wholeness. Still to this day the potential of the local church is almost more than I can grasp. No other organisation on earth is like the church. Nothing even comes close."

Missing papers

Occasionally papers disappear from the table in the foyer. In order to make sure that we keep things together, there is a tray on Wendy's desk for all the papers, letters, agendas and rotas that go out on a Sunday morning.

Growing Leaders

Growing Leaders is a course run by the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS) which helps churches to develop leadership within their ranks. We want to run this course for a year starting in September, and Charles Burgess will be coming to speak to the PCC about this on June 15th. He will be in St. John's on Sunday 19th July to talk to the wider congregation.

Have you a couple of hours to spare?

Or do you know someone who might be able to help at a day centre making sandwiches and drinks for the homeless – possibly only once a week? The work is town centre based with parking available close to the bus station. This is a rewarding job. Please ring Beryl on 01793 525303 for more details.

Rotas

Could everybody, if they are on a rota to do something, please check their rotas regularly and also make a note of it in their diaries or whatever they use to record what they are doing. If you cannot fulfil your duty please make arrangements to swap your slot with someone else on the rota. Thank you.

Parish Office

The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
