Prayer topics this week

Our own journey of faith and commitment during Holy Week.

The Good Old Days Revisited

Raymond is being installed as Honorary Canon at Bristol Cathedral at 3:30pm on Saturday, 2nd May. After that, by popular demand, he is going to perform his Amazing Memory Trick at the Entertainment Evening. If that completely flops, there are other culinary, musical, comical and terpsichorian delights for your communal delectation. If you have an act, Andy Hall, our resident MC, will be delighted to hear from you. Don't be shy.

Renewal of Giving – urgent request

Please return any outstanding Promise Cards urgently to our Treasurer, Andrew Dean.

Filling Station

The next Filling Station collection is on Thursday 16th April. The envelopes are ready to be collected on the table in the foyer.

Report and Accounts 2008

At its meeting on 23rd March, PCC approved and adopted the Report and Financial Statements for 2008. A copy can be viewed on the noticeboard and if you would like to have your own copy to study before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Monday 27th April, please have a word with our Treasurer, Andrew and he will be happy to supply one.

Uganda

We were sorry to learn that children of the Blind Centre were not able to get to the games this year. Sadly, that is how things often go in Uganda. However, we are in e-mail contact with one of the teachers at the Blind Centre, and look forward to seeing the money used to take the children to the games next year. Should you wish your gift to be returned, we will naturally be willing to do that.

Why Holy Week?

The great Christian festivals are always preceded by a period of preparation. Advent comes before Christmas. We start thinking about this story well in advance, so that when the day comes, we are able to experience the real wonder of Christ's birth.

Easter is preceded by Lent and Holy Week because it is vital that we arrive at the Empty Tomb by way of the Cross.

Today is Palm Sunday, when we recall Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on the final week of his life.

Maundy Thursday is the day on which we remember Jesus celebrating the first ever Communion service, in remembrance of his death and passion. There will be a Communion service in St. John's at 7:45pm that evening.

Good Friday is the day of the Cross. Our United Good Friday walk in company with the other churches in this area begins this year at the Police Pod near Asda at 10:00am and continues on to Christ the Servant Abbey Meads with a service starting at about 10:30am. We also have a reflective service here at St. John's at 7:45 pm that same evening in order to help us enter into the reality of Jesus experience of death.

On the morning of Easter Day we assemble at 6:00am at Barbury Castle to celebrate the wonder of the resurrection along with the rising sun. If you start your Easter at 9:00am or 11:00am next week, you will miss a lot. That is the climax of the story, not the beginning.

Fairtrade Update

You may recall a DVD and sermon series back in 2007, on child slavery within the chocolate industry of the Ivory Coast. This chocolate was used by UK manufacturers so our own purchases could well have been supporting this injustice. Well the great news recently announced is that Cadbury's Dairy Milk - their best known product, is to receive fairtrade certification by late summer this year. Only two years ago Cadburys said publicly it was impossible and impracticable. This change has been achieved by the power of the fairtrade consumer and their campaigning, and demonstrates that together we can create a fairer world.

Electoral Roll

The Church Electoral Roll is being revised between Sunday 22nd February and Sunday 12th April. If you are worshipping regularly at St. John's and would like your name included on the roll please ask Sharon Mortimer for an application form.

Parish Office

The Parish Office will be open on Wednesday and Thursday morning this week (Holy Week) from 9:00am to 1:00pm. The Office will be closed in Easter Week and there will be no bulletin on Sunday 19th April.
