Revd. Joe Morris - Memorial Service

On Friday, 3rd April at 3:00pm there will be a Memorial Service in celebration of Joe's life, here in St. John's. Those attending either service are invited to bring a photo or reminiscence to put in the Remembrance Book. Alternatively, friends may just wish to write who they are and where they met Joe.

Donations in memory of, and thanksgiving, for Joe are to be given to Interserve, a mission close to Joe's heart. Donations can be passed to our Treasurer, Andrew and should be marked 'Joe/Interserve' with cheques payable to St. John's PCC. There will also be a bowl for donations for Interserve at the Memorial Service.

Homemade cakes

Homemade cakes are needed for refreshments after Joe's Memorial service at St. John's. If you are able to supply any would you please contact Lesley Hawkes. We will have several visitors to the church on that day.

Urgently required – old paint

Any amount of different coloured paint (gloss/emulsion) is required for Steve Bessent and his team to complete the crèche and paint in figures etc. onto the wall. If you can please help would you kindly contact Steve.

Raymond's Installation as Canon

Raymond is being installed as Honorary Canon at Bristol Cathedral at 3:30pm on Saturday, 2nd May. When we return from Bristol (at about 6:15pm) we will be holding a buffet reception at St. John's to which all members of the church are invited. The celebrations will continue with an evening of entertainment starting at about 7:30pm! The evening is absolutely free. We do need to know what numbers to expect for catering purposes, so please sign up on the list on the table in the church foyer (even if you are on the coach list). If you are willing to display your entertainment skills on that evening, Andy Hall, our resident MC will be delighted to hear from you - there's a list for that too!

Fairtrade Update

You may recall a DVD and sermon series back in 2007, on child slavery within the chocolate industry of the Ivory Coast. This chocolate was used by UK manufacturers so our own purchases could well have been supporting this injustice. Well the great news recently announced is that Cadbury's Dairy Milk - their best known product, is to receive fairtrade certification by late summer this year. Only two years ago Cadburys said publicly it was impossible and impracticable. This change has been achieved by the power of the fairtrade consumer and their campaigning, and demonstrates that together we can create a fairer world.

Renewal of Giving

Please can you return your prayerful responses by Palm Sunday, 5th April.

Report and Accounts 2008

At its meeting on 23rd March, PCC approved and adopted the Report and Financial Statements for 2008. A copy can be viewed on the noticeboard and if you would like to have your own copy to study before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Monday 27th April, please have a word with our Treasurer, Andrew and he will be happy to supply one.

Electoral Roll

The Church Electoral Roll is being revised between Sunday 22nd February and Sunday 12th April. If you are worshipping regularly at St. John's and would like your name included on the roll please ask Sharon Mortimer for an application form.

News from Pinehurst

After a long period of consultation within the deanery, St. Mary's are moving into new territory. For many years Pinehurst has remained an area largely untouched by the church. Pinehurst technically falls into the parish of Penhill, despite the fact that it is right next to St. Mary's. As a result of some parish restructuring, Carol Stone will look after both Upper Stratton [her present parish] and Penhill. An Associate Vicar will be appointed at St. Mary's with responsibility for Pinehurst. The aim will be to work with the people of that area. Although there is not much yet in the way of detail to announce, this is going to be a Fresh Expressions project. In other words, the associate vicar will first of all explore what might be the best way for him to serve the people of Pinehurst. It will not be an easy job. We will be praying for the whole project as it continues to develop.

J.A.M. in Space Briefing Meeting

A big thank you to all who have signed up for helping at JAM. We will be holding a briefing meeting for all involved on Monday 20th April in Church at 7:30 pm. If you have signed up please do try and come as we need to make sure that everyone knows what they will be doing on the Saturday. We will cover the activities that are not directly involved with working with the children first to let people get away as soon as possible. If you are not sure if you need to attend please have a word with Andrew Carpenter.
