Revd. Joe Morris - Memorial Service

On Friday, 3rd April at 3:00pm there will be a Memorial Service in celebration of Joe's life, here in St. John's. Those attending either service are invited to bring a photo or reminiscence to put in the Remembrance Book. Alternatively, friends may just wish to write who they are and where they met Joe.

Donations in memory of, and thanksgiving, for Joe are to be given to Interserve, a mission close to Joe's heart. Donations can be passed to our Treasurer, Andrew and should be marked 'Joe/Interserve' with cheques payable to St. John's PCC. There will also be a bowl for donations for Interserve at the Memorial Service.

Homemade cakes

Homemade cakes are needed for refreshments after Joe's Memorial service at St. John's. If you are able to supply any would you please contact Lesley Hawkes. We will have several visitors to the church on that day.

Renewal of Giving

If you did not receive your brochure last Sunday, please pick it up from the table near the Quiet Room today. Your prayerful responses may be passed to our Treasurer, Andrew, any time but we would like to have them all back by Palm Sunday, 5th April. If you send the Promise Card back by post, please remember to put Andrew's full address on it.

Brochure Blues

We have to apologise because something seems to have gone seriously wrong with page 6 of the brochure. It was fine in the proof, but for some reason the final result came out as complete gibberish.

Back to Normal

Raymond thanks everyone for their best wishes during his recent illness. Much to the whole family's relief, it turned out not to be malaria. "The consultant reckoned the most likely cause was something I had breathed in on the plane on the way back from Uganda. Anyway, the treatment I have been receiving is progressing well. Unfortunately, on Monday I was diagnosed with suspected deep vein thrombosis. I'm delighted to say that also turned out to be a false alarm. So, in one week I have not had malaria, and not had deep vein thrombosis. I am sincerely hoping there's nothing else I don't have."

Good Friday Walk of Witness

Over the years the number of churches involved in the Good Friday walk of witness has grown. This year we will be holding a joint service at Christ the Servant Abbey Meads at 10:30am on Good Friday morning. That means we will be starting at an entirely new place but walking together. The organisers have taken on board the point made a few years ago that the walk is an important part of the day for people. Brian Sweetman has issued the following directions: "On Good Friday we will meet at the Police Pod near Asda at 10.00am. We will then walk around the precinct, and cut through to the estate to the Church. As for the service itself, we have a crèche which can be used, if needed. That will enable people to listen to and see the service. We will also have appropriate colouring materials for any children who might find the proceedings a bit difficult."

Easter Eve

This year there will be a confirmation service at 6:30pm at St Barnabas Church, and at least two of our members are being confirmed at that occasion.

Easter Day

For those new to St John's, we always start the day with worship at dawn at Barbury Castle. This year the service will begin at 6:00am. It sounds dreadful, but it is a wonderful experience. If you want new spiritual perspective on Easter, then join those women who came to the tomb at daybreak.

Urgently required – Old Paint

Any amount of different coloured paint (gloss/emulsion) is required for Steve Bessent and his team to complete the crèche and paint in figures etc. onto the wall. If you can please help would you kindly contact Steve Bessent.

Blind Children's Sports Gathering

Thank you so much to all who have contributed to this appeal. In addition to the gift made by Chris Hawkes when he was in Uganda, we have received £440 to enable the blind children of Balitta to participate in the National Games in Kampala. What a wonderful response! No further donations are now needed for this cause.

Raymond's Installation as Canon

Raymond will be installed as Honorary Canon at Bristol Cathedral at 3:30pm on Saturday, 2nd May. We are planning to take members of the congregation by coach to support Raymond on his special day. If you would like to see Raymond installed, please sign the coach list on the table in the church foyer. The subsidised coach cost will be £5 per ticket for adults - £3 for children and young people aged 15 and under. BUT HURRY! There are only a couple of coach seats left.

When we return from Bristol (at about 6:15pm) we will be holding a buffet reception at St. John's to which all members of the church are invited. The celebrations will continue with an evening of entertainment starting at about 7:30pm! The evening is absolutely free. We do need to know what numbers to expect for catering purposes, so please sign up on the list on the table in the church foyer (even if you are on the coach list). If you are willing to display your entertainment skills on that evening, Andy Hall, our resident MC will be delighted to hear from you - there's a list for that too!
