Prayer topics this week
Teachers and children as they return to school. Pray for those who are experiencing difficulties in their marriages or other family relationships. For the unemployed.
Grateful thanks
To all those who did a marvellous job with the spring cleaning in St. John's last Saturday. Curtains were taken down and washed and hung back up on Sunday, windows cleaned, and a list of endless jobs all carried out. With thanks from your church family.
Children's Ministry
If you are a children's leader or assistant leader, then you should have received a letter from Raymond inviting you to a meeting on Monday September 8th at 7:45pm here in church. We have a number of important things to discuss.
The German Visit
A special thanks to those people from our congregation who have offered to host some German visitors from the town of Salzgitter in October. There is a meeting on Monday, September 1st to which hosts are invited - as they already know. At one stage accommodation looked like it might prove to be a problem, but the generous hospitality of Christians around Swindon has meant we can offer our visitors a welcome - and a bed for the night!
More Interest in Bwaziba School
The new school in the parish of Bwaziba has been largely built by us here at St. John’s Haydon Wick. We received a letter of thanks, from the chair of the Uganda/Bristol link following our recent display in Bristol cathedral. He was struck by how much can actually be done by a local church.
Much of the credit for this work must go to the tireless Frances David. It was through her that we first learned about the plight of the people of Bwaziba, and their determination to do something about the almost total lack of education for their children. Neither they, nor we, could possibly have foreseen how things would have worked out following Frances’ visit to the village. Frances has invited a couple of teachers from Oliver Tomkins school to come with her to Uganda in February, and the school at Bwaziba is on their itinerary. Oliver Tomkins is making Uganda a special project.
Teaching program for the Christmas term
Beginning next week we will be starting a new sermon series called "Christ Above All – the message of Hebrews.” This magnificent letter was written to a group of first century Christians who were in danger of giving up. Some have been physically assaulted; some have been cast into prison; others had been ridiculed in public because of their faith and trust in Jesus. Everyone was struggling. What could the writer say to encourage them?
"If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have To Get Out Of the Boat"
This must be one of the longest book titles in history! John Ortberg’s wonderful book has been transferred to DVD, and will form the basis of our home groups for the next six weeks. The author, as gifted a speaker as he is a writer, offers six teaching sessions all based around the subject of Peter’s decision to step out of the boat and meet Jesus on the water. We will be showing a clip this morning, so you can get a flavour of what he is talking about. Home group leaders will find the accompanying material for the next six sessions available this morning.
Service Rota
We are in the process of collating all the information from the Renewal of Giving Response Forms into the Service Rota for September – December. The September rota has been sent to all those taking part in the services in September. The October to December rota will be sent out shortly.
