For safety on our streets. For the sick and suffering. How each of us could further serve at St. John's. Peace in the World.
A big thank you
Pauline and Harry Davis and Jean and Andrew Dean did a magnificent job of organising a celebration after Joe's ordination. Because of his state of health, it was very difficult to plan anything in advance. However, not only did they manage to achieve it, but it was done in such a way that Joe was able to take it slightly easier at home, before making the journey to Chelmsford later that evening. Thanks too to the Churchfields home group for some amazing puddings. [Puddings seem to have been a theme of this summer.] We presented Joe with an engraved pen, in honour of the occasion.
Joe's first Communion Service
Joe will celebrate his first communion service in St. John's at 9:00 a.m.today allowing Raymond to take the service in St. Andrew's. Like many of you, Raymond is deeply sorry to miss it. However, we intend that Joe will celebrate his first communion at our 11:00 a.m. service on Sunday July 20th.
North Swindon
At the present time both the Reverend Beth Brown and the Reverend Mike Haslam have been off work for some time. Beth was seriously ill last year when she was off work for three months. She is not expected to return any time soon. Our hope is that Mike might be able to return in the not too distant future, but we will know more definitely by September.
Both have been signed off for a further four weeks at least and Raymond has been asked to look after the parish in the meantime, organising weddings, baptisms, funerals and services at least until the end of August. There are two churches in the parish - St Francis which meets in the school in Taw Hill, and St. Andrew's in Blunsdon. Clearly Raymond is not able to cut himself into three, so there will have to be help of some kind from the wider deanery clergy and lay ministers [readers], as well as our own team here in St John's. As Mike was expected back at work last Monday, no cover of any kind has been arranged for July or August. So we have a little crisis. Joe could not have been priested at a better moment!
What can I give? What can I bring?
This has been the theme of the last two Sunday's sermons. We are not conducting a theoretical exercise here, but rather a practical one. Sometimes there is an "ad hoc" feel about the way things are done, because we do not have people in place for particular jobs. Furthermore, some of our teams lack captains or leaders. In order to address both of these situations, we are running this exercise over the summer. Do please return your form to Pauline Davis, so that we can raise our game.
