Prayer topics this week
For all those attending the Clergy Conference at Swanwick from Monday, especially for Raymond and Andy Hall. May the work of the spirit be in abundance. A safe and enjoyable trip for the Pram Club on Monday. The unemployed and those actively seeking employment. Peace in the World.
Joe's ordination
Joe was hoping be ordained in Bristol cathedral on Saturday. However, he is well aware that following the chemotherapy he is due to receive this coming week, he is going to be far from well at the weekend. At the present time we can only say that Joe's ordination in the cathedral might take place and it might not. We will send out information on Friday, for those of you who are able to make it at short notice. On that basis please sign up on the list in the foyer to say whether you intend to come to the Cathedral and Joe's house afterwards.
Clergy conference at Swanwick
Raymond will be absent from Monday to Thursday at the Clergy Conference in Swanwick. This will be a Clergy Conference with a difference, as Bishop Mike has asked us to bring along a member of the congregation if we possibly can. I am delighted to say that Andy Hall has accepted the invitation, and he will be St. John's representative next week.
What will we do over the Summer?
Some years ago, we used to have All Age Services for six weeks over the summer holiday. We then experimented with three All Age Services and three adult services when the children would come together in one group, for craft etc. This was definitely the better idea. However, we do not want to work our children's leaders to death. We like to give them a break over the summer holiday.
Therefore, we are asking once again for volunteers for the following dates. Usually two people is quite sufficient, in view of the number of children away over the summer. A number of you have helped in the past, and we are looking forward to your assistance again.
The dates are July 27, August 10, and August 24.
In view of the Olympics, we will be looking at three sporting metaphors used by St. Paul. I am hoping you are not heartily sick of sport by then. If attendances plummet, I will realise I have made a big mistake!
Serving coffee
Over the years, people have made numerous comments about how uninspiring it is to have coffee in the committee room. Therefore the PCC has been trying to think of a better way of doing this. We will be experimenting over the next few months to see what can be done. At the present time, we are asking you to serve yourself, from the tables at the bottom of the stairs. Please note there is more than one flask, so we do not all need to queue at the same place. In this building, there is no ideal area to serve coffee, but we want to improve the experience for people as best we can. If you are on the coffee Rota, Pauline has written to you to explain the procedure for the future.
What can I give? What can I bring?
Over the next two weeks we will be looking at these two questions. Next week, we will be giving out some brochures for you to read and complete. The aim is to do two things. However, if I tell you them now, you won't bother listening to the sermon!
Facing large increases in your energy bills? - read on
A St. John's member has drawn our attention to the availability of discounts for households on low incomes who are facing increases in their gas and electricity bills. We are advised that each energy supplier has to have a Social Tariff in place to help such households. If you think you may qualify, telephone your energy supplier's customer service number to ask whether you are entitled to the discount.
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!
Tape Ministry
If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
