Latest news on Joe
Joe was suffering from a high temperature in the early part of last week. At the time of writing that has gone down, and he is no longer experiencing the nausea of last weekend. Joe's current poor health, and the fact that he is due to receive his next session of chemotherapy in the week before his ordination, means that we are not certain whether or not he will be ordained in Bristol Cathedral along with the other candidates on June 28th. If his ordination does not take place on that date, it does not mean that he will not be ordained at all. Bishop Mike has a number of options available to him, and has made some suggestions. I assured him, on your behalf that St. John's will always want to do whatever is best for Joe.
Mike, Mary & Ellie Southgate
Would like to thank all the members of St. John's for their words of condolence, cards and prayers following the death of Mike's mother Marigold on 31st May. "It is especially good at this time to know that we are part of such a loving and caring family."
Andrew's eyesight
We are all absolutely delighted to hear the news about Andrew's improving eyesight. It was a real joy to get an e-mail from him for the first time in weeks. Pity he missed a lot of the cricket!
Serving coffee
Over the years, people have made numerous comments about how uninspiring it is to have coffee in the committee room. Therefore the PCC has been trying to think of a better way of doing this. We will be experimenting over the next few months to see what can be done. At the present time, we are asking you to serve yourself, from the tables at the bottom of the stairs. Please note there is more than one flask, so we do not all need to queue at the same place. In this building, there is no ideal area to serve coffee, but we want to improve the experience for people as best we can. If you are on the coffee Rota, Pauline has written to you to explain the procedure for the future.
What can I do? What can I bring?
If you are a member of the 11:00 a.m. congregation you will recognise those words from one of our most popular songs. We sang them again last week. Over the next few weeks there will be an opportunity to answer that question. We will be interrupting our sermon series on Amos for two weeks to look at it on June 22nd and June 29th, and in true St. John's fashion, you will each be receiving a "What can I give? What can I bring?" pack.
Did you come punctually?
"Some are born late. Some achieve lateness. And some have lateness thrust upon them." I think that was how Shakespeare put it. In any case, it has been good to see our congregation arriving in better time. We had got to a point where about a third of the congregation was arriving after 11:00 a.m. That does not help other people to worship, and it is not good for those who come late either. So, if you have been setting off a few minutes earlier to be here for the beginning of the service, we do appreciate it.
Counting and Banking Rota – WE NEED YOU!
We have received one new offer so far – thank you. We are very grateful to the St. John's members who are on the rota to count and bank the offerings at St. John's. We do need more people on the rota so that those on it are involved less frequently. Our aim is to reduce the frequency to only once every two months. If you are good at counting money and are willing to be involved or would like more information, please speak to one of the Churchwardens, Pauline Davis or Rod Mortimer. We are planning to have a short meeting after church with all counters in a few weeks time.
Woman’s Day Conference
This one day conference is being held at Freshbrook Evangelical Church next Wednesday, 18th June from 9:45am to 2:30pm. The theme is "Keeping the Faith". For more details please see the poster on the notice board.
Last year - SEW! This year - KNIT!
Shoe Box Sunday is on 16th November, 2008. In the service on that day we will be dedicating the boxes and form a human chain to send them on their way from the church to the cars from where they will start their long journey to reach those children for whom they will be their only Christmas present. We don't want you to be the weakest link, or the missing link, in the human chain so please write the date in your diary NOW! If we reach 200 boxes this year, we will top 1,000 boxes sent from St. John's. Let's go for it!
And it's time to start thinking and working! Last year we sent 183 boxes and made 176 bags to go in them so that the children had something in which to keep their toys. That took a lot of sewing! This year, we are planning to knit very simple bags/purses for little girls. We need about 50 but the more the merrier. Will you help us? The bags are made in garter stitch and are really simple to make. Please see the board in the foyer for a pattern. Any scraps of wool can be used. For further information, please speak to Jean Dean.
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!
Tape Ministry
