Prayer topics this week
For all those affected by the floods this week in Haydon Wick, praying especially for members of St. John's family.
Joe Morris
We were deeply saddened and distressed to hear Joe's news last week. Here is how he related it in two emails sent this week.
"I am afraid I have to give you all bad news. Last week I was in hospital with jaundice and so failed to have my radiotherapy. When they scanned me, they found that the cancer in my liver had spread. Not only that, but it has spread up into the abdomen and into my lungs as well. Having gone from a small cluster of cancer cells which could have been operated on I now have a large network of cells and it is now inoperable. I am going to the oncologist today to discuss chemo with him. There is a glimmer of hope if I respond to the chemo; realistically there is not much hope. They haven't given me a time frame; I guess they may do that today. There is nothing humanly speaking that can save me so please do pray."
Following that meeting with the oncologist he writes:
"Well the glimmer of hope still glimmers. Though there are tumours around my heart, abdomen, in my lungs, pelvis and liver, the doctors think they can give me chemo to combat the symptoms. I will have chemo as before every two weeks with a dose over two days. It will involve hair loss this time, and sickness with the runs! Not pleasant. There is still nothing that can cure me but God so please keep the prayers going. Because I responded well to chemo before the doctors are hopeful I will again. I start in a couple of weeks."
After so much good news, all this is a terrible blow for the whole family to bear. And also for the church family here at St. John's. We have all taken Joe to our hearts.
The latest information is that Joe has been far from well this week. He has been suffering from severe nausea. As for his ordination as priest in Bristol Cathedral, at the time of writing no decision has been made as to whether he will, or will not, be well enough to be there.
Message from Jean and Andrew
We are so grateful for all your prayers, phone calls, cards, meals, messages and offers of help etc. (and chocolate) during Andrew's illness. He is feeling a lot better but still has blurred vision which is very frustrating. Andrew is due to see the eye specialist on Tuesday. Please continue to prayer for Andrew's full recovery.
Woman's Day Conference
This one day conference is being held at Freshbrook Evangelical Church on Wednesday 18th June from 9:45am to 2:30pm. The theme is "Keeping the Faith". For more details please see the poster on the notice board.
Revd Andrew Francis
Andrew Francis, minister at Emmanuel in Haydon Wick is looking and feeling considerably better. A virus damaged the valves of his heart last summer. He is not yet back at work - that is still some time away - but thank God, there are many signs of progress.
Coffee time blues
PCC have decided to experiment with a new way of serving tea and coffee after the service. We will be serving from three different parts of the church from vacuum flasks. We are trying to make having tea and coffee a more comfortable experience. We will be explaining more to the people who are on the rota. This will start in a couple of week's time.
