Prayer topics this week
A desperate cry from the hearts of Zimbabwe screams across the world. It calls upon all Christians of every denomination in every nation to focus their prayers, on Sunday 27th April, 2008 on the critical situation in Zimbabwe, a nation in dire distress and teetering on the brink of human disaster. May a continual strong stream of prayer and supplication flow up to the Lord.
Children’s Leaders' Assistants
Without you, our children’s leaders cannot do their job properly. Please check that the rota dates are in your diary.
Resolutions to be proposed at APCM
The PCC has approved two resolutions to be considered and voted on at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Monday, 28th April. They are proposed amendments to the Standing Orders (or rules) of the St. John's Parochial Church Council. The first proposed amendment, which was unanimously approved by PCC will, if passed at the APCM, reduce the number of elected PCC members from 2009. The second amendment simply changes the latest finishing time of PCC meetings. Copies of the proposed amendments are on the table in the church foyer. Please do take one and study the changes before the meeting when they will explained further.
Deanery Synod
Deanery Synod meets in the evening about 4 times a year. It's an opportunity for lay and ordained people from all the churches in Swindon to meet together and learn more about what's going on across the diocese and to have some input into decisions that are taken.
At the March meeting this year Bishop Mike spoke about the growing interest in spirituality in society today and encouraged us to have the courage to offer to pray for or with people outside the church as part of our witness, as often people are happy for others to pray for them about particular needs or circumstances.
It's one way of finding out more about issues, training, events and opportunities in the diocese that might be of relevance to us at St. John's.
So, don't just write it off as lots of boring meetings - it's also a chance to keep in touch with the wider Church in Swindon and across the Bristol diocese.
Venture camp
Toby and Tamsin are inviting applications to their summer venture camp for young people between 11 and 14 years of age. It will take place at Hethersett near Norwich - not far from the sea from August to 10th - 17th. Laser quest, bowling, crafts etc are all on offer. It is a chance to get to know God better and make some lasting friendships.
Joint homegroup quiz night
We are holding a Quiz Night on Tuesday 20th May at the Swindon Football Ground. Tickets will be £9 per head to include a meal. There will be a prize for the winning team. Quiz starts at 7:30pm, teams of 4 - 6. Home Group members, their guests, folk thinking they might like to join a home group, or Alpha, will be very welcome. Please see Mary Southgate or Paul Nichol for more details.
Electoral Roll
The new electoral roll is now on display in the lobby. Please check your entry carefully and report any errors or omissions to Sharon Mortimer as soon as possible.
Tea and coffee
PCC decided to experiment with the idea serving tea and coffee into the crèche room after the service. The aim is to allow people to come back into church more easily with their drink, rather than having to stand in the rather uncomfortable committee room. Reports from the kitchen last week were not encouraging, but a new idea has surfaced. We would like to serve into the crèche a couple more times so we can get your feedback as servers and consumers.
