HandsPrayer topics this week

Our own journey of faith and commitment during Holy Week. For those that work in voluntary organisations. For our families and friends, near and far.

Easter Services

Here are the services for Holy Week and Easter. You are strongly encouraged to come to the service on Good Friday. Palm Sunday is a day of celebration. Easter Day is a day of light, hope and joy in the resurrection. Good Friday lies between them. In order to appreciate the hope of the empty tomb, we need to enter into the darkness, sorrow and loneliness of the cross. The first disciples entered the empty tomb by way of Calvary. So must we.

See Easter through Peter's eyes

Last Sunday we began a series called "Peter's Easter". We looked at Peter's experiences with Jesus, "On the Lake". Today we look at him "Against the Lord". The other titles in the series are:

Maundy Thursday - Round the Table
Good Friday - By the Fire
Easter Day - At the Tomb
Sunday after Easter - On the Shore

Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday. Although we will not be preaching on the theme of Palm Sunday, you will receive a Palm Cross this morning.

The Walk of Witness

SunriseIn the past there has been some doubt as to whether the Good Friday service after the Walk of Witness is aimed at children or not. Some churches have made it so and some have not. This year the service will be in St. John's. It will last no longer than 30 minutes, and children will be very much in mind in the planning and preparation.

Easter Morning

What happens at the SonRise service? The Salvation Army band plays for us, and churches from Haydon Wick and Wroughton gather together to worship. We aim to see the sun rise as we sing the final hymn. This is not an exact science. Sometimes the sun has been obscured by clouds; sometimes we have just got wet; sometimes we have started the service a bit early and seen the sun rise as we drive down the hill, and sometimes everything has come together and we have got it just right! When we do it is a glorious sight! A million times better than being in bed! If you have never been there, then make it a memorable Easter by joining with us at first light on Easter Day. Even if the weather is against us, you will not regret it.

St. John’s Memorial Fund

At its last meeting, PCC unanimously agreed to the setting up of a St. John’s Memorial Fund to be used to further and assist ministry within the parish and not for general running or maintenance expenditure.

At the end of 2006, we received a legacy from the estate of Kerry Young and, with the agreement of her family; this is being used to finance the Parish Administrator’s salary.

This year, we have benefited from gifts of money in lieu of flowers in memory of June Bye. Both the Kerry Young legacy and the gifts in memory of June will form the initial basis of the new memorial fund, and interest accruing will also be added to the fund. Other legacies or monies donated in lieu of flowers will be added to the Memorial Fund.

The new fund also gives members the opportunity to give donations in memory of loved ones at special times such as anniversaries, and one such gift has already been passed to the Treasurer. The setting up of the Memorial Fund will in no way affect the right of donors to place restrictions on the use of their donations. For further information, please contact our Treasurer, Andrew Dean.

If you are one of those who have still not returned your completed Promise Card it will help us to plan our finances for the year ahead if you do so.

ScrollThe Church Electoral Roll

The Electoral Roll is being revised between Sunday 9th March and Sunday 6th April. If you are a regular worshipper at St. John's and would like to be on the roll, please see Sharon Mortimer for more details and an application form. Also, if you are already on the roll but have changed your address or phone number since last April please let Sharon know your new details.

J.A.M in the Caribbean 2008

This will take place on Saturday 10th May in St John’s Church and we anticipate between 100 and 140 children will attend this annual event. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to spend time with some of the children of Haydon Wick. However, we will need a lot of help to run the day and would ask you to consider if this is something you could do. We will need group leaders and assistants, registration assistants, refreshment organisers, first aid assistants and people to move furniture etc in the church. If you can help, then please sign up on the list in the entrance hall. If you need more information about what is involved please contact Raymond Adams 634258 or Andrew Carpenter 848663. Please note, if you have already indicated that you are willing to help then there is no need to sign up on the form.

Home groups

Home Groups will run for a couple of weeks after Easter, and then re-start during the week commencing April 21, with the Jeff Lucas DVD series, "Stop Looking for the Will of God". We showed a clip last week and will be showing others from the series over the coming weeks so that you get an idea of what it is about. Our aim will be to start at least one new group during that week. If you are not a member of a home group but would like to be, please sign up on the sheet in the foyer.

The Parish Office

The Parish Office is open on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9am to 1pm. All items for the bulletin to Wendy in writing first thing on Wednesday please!
