HandsPrayer topics this week

All the newcomers to our church family, and the tea next Sunday. Our own preparations for Holy Week. For suffering Christians around the world.

Easter Services

Here are the services for Holy Week and Easter. You are strongly encouraged to come to the service on Good Friday. Palm Sunday is a day of celebration. Easter Day is a day of light, hope and joy in the resurrection. Good Friday lies between them. In order to appreciate the hope of the empty tomb, we need to enter into the darkness, sorrow and loneliness of the cross. The first disciples entered the empty tomb by way of Calvary. So must we.

St. John’s Memorial Fund

At its last meeting, PCC unanimously agreed to the setting up of a St. John’s Memorial Fund to be used to further and assist ministry within the parish and not for general running or maintenance expenditure.

At the end of 2006, we received a legacy from the estate of Kerry Young and, with the agreement of her family; this is being used to finance the Parish Administrator’s salary.

This year, we have benefited from gifts of money in lieu of flowers in memory of June Bye. Both the Kerry Young legacy and the gifts in memory of June will form the initial basis of the new memorial fund, and interest accruing will also be added to the fund. Other legacies or monies donated in lieu of flowers will be added to the Memorial Fund.

The new fund also gives members the opportunity to give donations in memory of loved ones at special times such as anniversaries, and one such gift has already been passed to the Treasurer. The setting up of the Memorial Fund will in no way affect the right of donors to place restrictions on the use of their donations. For further information, please contact our Treasurer, Andrew Dean

If you are one of those who have still not returned your completed Promise Card it will help us to plan our finances for the year ahead if you do so.

The Walk of Witness

SunriseIn the past there has been some doubt as to whether the Good Friday service after the Walk of Witness is aimed at children or not. Some churches have made it so and some have not. This year the service will be in St. John's. It will last no longer than 30 minutes, and children will be very much in mind in the planning and preparation.

Easter breakfast

You might like to consider getting a few friends together for a breakfast after the Easter Sonrise Service. Lots of hot coffee will probably be needed. Easter is about as early as it can be, so it is likely to be a little cooler this year. Wrap up warm!

Foodbank logoSwindon Foodbank

A BIG thank you from Swindon Foodbank to everyone involved in the Black & White Ball, £3,600 profit was raised! Over 150 people had a great time and everyone is keen to come the next Ball (6th March 2009).

And finally… Help needed! Could you help with publicising Foodbank's activities, liaising with the local press to promote supermarket collections and fundraising events? Experience is not necessary so if you fancy giving this a go, please let Bob Hayward know – 07798 930755

Foodbank Box - The box is back under the table in the entrance hall. There are a few collection leaflets to give a guide as to the items we collect. We currently have a shortage for cereals 250 or 500 grm packs though this changes from week to week. For further information you can call Brian Crookes on 01793 695156.

Lost Property

We now have a Lost Property Box, for placing in items left behind in the Church. We will not be able to take responsibility for these items and will put a 4 week date on them. If they are not claimed in that period then we will dispose of article(s).
