The Humanitarian Crisis in Uganda

Uganda is facing its worst humanitarian crisis in over 50 years following torrential rain and floods. This year's harvest has been wiped out and the future is very bleak. Today, and next Sunday (Harvest Sunday), we have the opportunity to give of our plenty to help those who have nothing. You will find a plate at the door for retiring offerings for the Uganda Crisis Appeal. Cheques should be made payable to St. John's PCC.

Building Project

After receiving two further gifts totalling £800, we are now a tantalising £2,000 (approximately) from reaching the total amount needed for all aspects of the Building Project (including furniture, furnishings and equipment). We are hoping the chairs for the Quiet Room will be delivered in time for the Dedication Service on Saturday - it will be touch and go! The phials are still coming in - we have received 104 so far containing £687. They can be returned any time and further gifts can be passed to Andrew - cheques payable to St. John's PCC please.

It’s a double whammy!

It’s Harvest time again – time to thank God for the harvest and for all He’s done for us and to respond to the needs of others less fortunate than we are.

Each year, on Harvest Sunday, we launch our Jar of Grace appeal and, between Harvest and Christmas, the clinking of coins (or the rustle of notes!) can be heard at mealtimes throughout the parish of St. John’s, Haydon Wick, and beyond, as men, women and children thank God for His provision of their needs by making a special thank offering.

Last year, the total was a magnificent £2,073 from 81 jars!! Can we reach 100 jars this year?

The proceeds will be shared between UNICEF (to save the lives of children) and Luweero. There are specially labelled jars available in the foyer at the back of the church, or you can use your own jar (clean please!) – BUT DO START NOW and use your Jar of Grace for your mealtime thank offerings between now and Christmas.

The second appeal is for shoeboxes of gifts for children who will receive no other Christmas present this year. Samaritans Purse International runs Operation Christmas Child and distributes over one and a half million shoeboxes of gifts to children in over 100 countries world-wide regardless of their nationality, political background or religious beliefs.

In recent years, St. John's has sent over 700 shoeboxes – a truly magnificent effort! If you would like to fill a shoebox, please take one of the leaflets from the table (this is essential reading for full guidance, instructions and labels) and a shoebox (or you can use your own). Please bring your shoeboxes back on National Shoebox Sunday (18th November) at the latest.

Parish administrator

The closing date for applications has now passed and the applicants will be interviewed during the next couple of weeks. We hope it will prove possible to make an appointment, and have the Parish Administrator installed in the new fully equipped Parish Office, within one month thereafter. The opening hours and telephone number of the Parish Office will be advertised in the bulletin once an appointment is made and a start date is agreed.

FlowersSay it with flowers

We are grateful for the contributions we receive towards the cost of flowers which decorate the church on Sunday, and for the artistic creativity of those who arrange them. If you wish to give money for flowers, please put your gift in a envelope marked ‘FLOWERS’ and address to our treasurer Andrew Dean. If your gift is to thank God for some special day or blessing, or to mark a particular occasion please include the reason in the enveloped and we will note the occasion in the bulletin on that Sunday. To do this the written note needs to reach Andrew at least fourteen days before the Sunday concerned.

Can you help?

This year's seniors lunch is being held at the Haydon Centre on Saturday 8th December at 12:30. As in previous years we will be asking for volunteers to help with providing food and transport and also helping out during the lunch. Please put this date in your diary now. More details nearer the time.

Dedication Service NEXT SATURDAY!

Just 6 days before the momentous Dedication Service. We are expecting about 230 people to the service and the front door will be closed at 4:55pm ready for the Bishop, clergy and readers to process. So if you are one of the 230 people coming, do please arrive early. We are asking members of the congregation to be in their seats by 4:45pm!

And please don't forget the lists in the church for you to sign up if you need, or can offer, transport for the Service of Dedication or if you wish to offer to be on the exciting bill of entertainment. YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU!
