Wishing it were still summer?
You can't turn back time, so do the next best thing and plan next summer instead! Come to New Wine 2008, for an amazing week of worship, teaching and fellowship. The dates for our area are 3rd-10th August and it's at the Royal Bath and West showground, Shepton Mallet. To take advantage of the best prices, we'll be booking the St John's group in at the end of November.
Not sure what it's all about and want to know more? Please contact Karen Madni, Kerry Garside or Mark Sansome who will be glad to tell you all about it!
A reminder of the next St John's prayer meeting
This meeting will be held in St John's on Tuesday, 2nd October at 7:45pm. This week's meeting will be "Praying together: St John's, a praying community?"
Swindon convention
Tuesday 16th - Thursday 18th October at 7:30pm. Charles Price will be speaking at Freshbrook Evangelical Church from the book of Romans, on "Equipped for effective living". There are brochures giving full details in the foyer. Those who have heard Charles Price before will know he is a first-class peacher and Bible teacher.
Humanitarian crisis in Uganda
Uganda is facing its worst humanitarian crisis in over 50 years following torrential rain and floods. This year's harvest has been wiped out and the future is very bleak.
Next Sunday, and on Harvest Sunday (14th October), we will have the opportunity to give of our plenty to help those who have nothing. On those Sundays, there will be a plate at the door for retiring offerings for the Uganda Crisis Appeal. Cheques should be made payable to St John's PCC.
Parish administrator
The post involves working in the parish office two days a week, although this may increase. Applicants must have typing, secretarial and administrative skills. E-mail and web skills are also essential. He or she will have a friendly and approachable manner, able to work both with church members and the wider public. For further information please contact Pauline Davis.
Harvest thanksgiving
As ever, harvest is a time when we remember the homeless, and those who are in need. The Food Bank and Filling Station have given us a list of items they would like to receive at harvest time. Food requests from the Swindon Food Bank and toiletry requests from The Filling Station are as follows. The Filling Station say, "Small and many is better than big." Please start saving now.

| Milk (UHT) | Shampoo |
| Cereal | Shaving Cream |

St John's giving scheme
Our Treasurer, Andrew, will shortly be preparing and issuing the weekly giving envelopes for 2008. If you are not already in the St. John's Giving Scheme and would like a set of envelopes, please speak to Andrew. He will also be happy to let you have information about giving to God's work at St. John's by Standing Order and Gift Aid.
Building project
First the need, then the prayer, the planning, followed by the appeal and response, the thanksgiving, the tenders, the despair, more prayer, a further appeal and responses, even greater thanksgiving, growing optimism, groundworks ("doesn't it look small?"), the construction, the completion ("doesn't it look big?"), the decoration, the carpets, the curtains ... and now the furniture!
Do have a look at the vestry/administrator's office this morning and the old vestry. We're almost there! But we are still not quite there on finance...
Gifts towards the cost can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew, with cheques being made payable to St John's PCC. Additionally, you can help by filling phials which can be found in the basket in the church room. Already 97 have been returned containing a total of just over £661!
Dedication of the extension - early replies needed!
This will be on Saturday 20th October 2007. If you haven't already replied to your invitation then please do so as soon as possible so that we can plan and cater for the expected numbers. If you have any queries please speak to Jean Dean or Pauline Davis.
Impresario requires acts
The St John's talent evening has produced some unforgettable memories over the years.
It is not too early to start practicing that piece of thespianism, terpsichory or prestidigitation you've been longing to demonstrate, but just never had the chance.
Mary Smith and the team will be producing a supper following the dedication on 20th October, and after that the fun will begin.
If you could help with washing up afterwards, please contact Pauline Davis.
Transport
If you are coming to the Dedication of the extension and would like a lift, would you please sign the list in the church room. If you are able to offer transport to people requiring a lift there is an alternative list for adding your name to that, also in the church room.
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!
Tape Ministry
If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
