Jane Williams - Swindon Mission Network
You will remember that about six months ago Jane Williams was due to come to St John's as part of an evening organised by the Swindon Mission Network. Unfortunately we got a phone call from Lambeth Palace to say that she was ill, just before she was due to set off.
However, she is returning again on Tuesday, September 18. Although this is a double booking with something we had planned ourselves, we will not, in fact, be cancelling the wife of the Archbishop of Canterbury! Jane is of course a journalist and a theologian in her own right.
Please sign up on the list in the foyer so that we know how many to cater for.
Joe Morris
Is not in here with us today because of his ongoing chemotherapy. However, it was great to have him here last week, and we look forward to his ministry. This now means we have no less than six dog collars in St John's. A group photo is probably called for! Meanwhile, please continue to pray for Andrew Francis. He is very far from well, and, although we have no new information, we know that an operation is likely sometime in the future. At present Andrew is at home, and unable to work.
Parish administrator - £7.50 per hour, 8 hours a week
The post involves working in the parish office on two days a week, though this may increase. Applicants must have typing, secretarial and administrative skills. E-mail and web skills are also essential. He or she will have a friendly and approachable manner, able to work both with church members and the wider public. For further information please contact Pauline Davis.
Swindon Foodbank
Swindon Foodbank continues to reach out to the hungry and those in crisis in our own town and as Foodbank has become more established the number of referrals has increased. 72 people were fed in one week alone...
So how about coming to the next Family Quiz Night and enjoying yourself whilst supporting local Christian outreach? This will be on Friday 28th September at 7.30pm at Open Hands, Lagos Street, Swindon.
See the Foodbank website for details ![]()
The next supermarket collection is on Saturday 13th October at Sainsbury’s Stratton St Margaret. Sign-up sheets will be on display soon. In the meantime if you see any 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 offers in the “non-perishable” food range please consider giving Foodbank the “extra” one..! Just bring it to Church and Bob Hayward will take all donations to the Foodbank.
Dance yourself dizzy!
Are you superb at the Samba or do you feel too timid to Tango? This weekend break may be for you.
Dance Weekend at the Narracott Hotel, Woolacombe, North Devon on 16th, 17th & 18th November. The cost is just £95 per person and includes dinner on the Friday evening, dance tuition on Saturday morning and afternoon, followed by a dance in the evening. Tuition available again on Sunday morning followed by lunch. Also included is a demonstration dance.
This is suitable for dancers at all levels, although you do not have to participate if you would prefer to watch. For further information please contact Jenny Marks on 642029.
Chocolate and fair trade
After last week's information about widespread child slavery and unspeakable brutality in the production of chocolate, we would be interested in setting up a Fair Trade chocolate stand. We will do this as a one-off in the first instance. If anybody is keen to run with this, please contact Raymond.
If you would like to know more about chocolate slavery, please go to the Stop the Traffik website ![]()
Impresario requires acts
The St John's talent evening has produced some unforgettable memories over the years.
It is not too early to start practicing that piece of thespianism, terpsichory or prestidigitation you've been longing to demonstrate, but just never had the chance.
Mary Smith and the team will be producing a supper following the dedication on 20th October, and after that the fun will begin.
Accommodation required
Toby & Tamsin and children would like to come to the dedication of the extension, stay for the buffet and then come to church on the Sunday morning. Are you able to accommodate the family on the night of the 20th October? If so please contact Andrew Dean.
St John's giving scheme
Our Treasurer, Andrew, will shortly be preparing and issuing the weekly giving envelopes for 2008. If you are not already in the St. John's Giving Scheme and would like a set of envelopes, please speak to Andrew. He will also be happy to let you have information about giving to God's work at St. John's by Standing Order and Gift Aid.
Building project
With
the building work complete, we are concentrating on planning the furnishing
and equipping of the new extension. We have sufficient money in the fund
to pay the builders and the architects with some left over to go towards
the cost of furnishings and equipment, but we still need a lot more!
Gifts towards the cost can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew with cheques being made payable to St John's PCC. Additionally, you can help by filling phials which can be found in the basket in the church room. Already 86 have been returned containing a total of just over £567!
Dedication of the extension - early replies needed!
This will be on Saturday 20th October 2007. If you haven't already replied to your invitation then please do so as soon as possible so that we can plan and cater for the expected numbers. If you have any queries please speak to Jean Dean or Pauline Davis.
Transport
If you are coming to the Dedication of the extension and would like a lift, would you please sign the list in the church room. If you are able to offer transport to people requiring a lift there is an alternative list for adding your name to that, also in the church room.
Arc Angel Christian Bookshop
Oldi and Larissa, members of our 11:00 congregation, would like to invite you to the grand opening of Arc Angel Christian Bookshop on Saturday, 22nd September at 1:00pm at 45 Victoria Road, Swindon. Everyone is welcome and they would love to see you there.
