Emergency operation

Those who were here last week will have heard about the emergency email we've received from Bishop Evans in Uganda. His wife, Rovina, needs a major operation, which he could not begin to afford. We sent the money out straight away, trusting in the generosity of our members. As it is, we were promised the entire sum in one cheque. We do thank the couple concerned, and here is Bishop Evans' latest letter:

Greetings in the name of the risen Christ.
You have come to our rescue. I have received the money.
Thanks so much for your caring hearts.
The operation can now go ahead, but please keep us in your prayers.
I know Rovina is strong though a bit frightened - but God is in control.
I will keep communicating.
Bishop Evans.

MasksImpresario requires acts

The St John's talent evening has produced some unforgettable memories over the years.

It is not too early to start practicing that piece of thespianism, terpsichory or prestidigitation you've been longing to demonstrate, but just never had the chance.

Mary Smith and the team will be producing a supper following the dedication on 20th October, and after that the fun will begin.

Diary

In September, we are having a focus on prayer, before home groups begin again in October. We will be looking at personal prayer on the first two Tuesdays of September and intercessory prayer shortly after. We'll start with a look at how we actually go about the business of daily prayer and Bible study. All of these meetings will begin at 7:45pm.

BicycleThe great cycle ride

This annual event takes place on Saturday, 8th September and we are looking for cyclists and walkers together with sponsors and helpers.

Cyclists/walkers are needed to take place in the ride/walk and 50% of the amount of their sponsorship goes to the Historic Churches Trust and the other 50% to the church of the cyclist's choice.

Sponsors will be sought by the participants so look out for them and please be willing to encourage them in this way. St. John's is on the route, and we need people to man the church for one hour slots during the day.

If you can help, or would like more information, please speak to Ron McGiffie.

Accommodation required

Toby & Tamsin and children would like to come to the dedication of the extension, stay for the buffet and then come to church on the Sunday morning. Are you able to accommodate the family on the night of the 20th October? If so please contact Andrew Dean.

St John's giving scheme

Our Treasurer, Andrew, will shortly be preparing and issuing the weekly giving envelopes for 2008. If you are not already in the St. John's Giving Scheme and would like a set of envelopes, please speak to Andrew. He will also be happy to let you have information about giving to God's work at St. John's by Standing Order and Gift Aid.

Building project

Construction workersWith the building work complete, we are concentrating on planning the furnishing and equipping of the new extension. We have sufficient money in the fund to pay the builders and the architects with some left over to go towards the cost of furnishings and equipment, but we still need a lot more!

Gifts towards the cost can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew with cheques being made payable to St John's PCC. Additionally, you can help by filling phials which can be found in the basket in the church room. Already 86 have been returned containing a total of just over £567!

Dedication of the extension - early replies needed!

This will be on Saturday 20th October 2007. If you haven't already replied to your invitation then please do so as soon as possible so that we can plan and cater for the expected numbers. If you have any queries please speak to Jean Dean or Pauline Davis.

Transport

If you are coming to the Dedication of the extension and would like a lift, would you please sign the list in the church room. If you are able to offer transport to people requiring a lift there is an alternative list for adding your name to that, also in the church room.

Arc Angel Christian Bookshop

Oldi and Larissa, members of our 11:00 congregation, would like to invite you to the grand opening of Arc Angel Christian Bookshop on Saturday, 22nd September at 1:00pm at 45 Victoria Road, Swindon. Everyone is welcome and they would love to see you there.
