BicycleThe great cycle ride

This annual event takes place on Saturday, 8th September and we are looking for cyclists and walkers together with sponsors and helpers.

Cyclists/walkers are needed to take place in the ride/walk and 50% of the amount of their sponsorship goes to the Historic Churches Trust and the other 50% to the church of the cyclist's choice.

Sponsors will be sought by the participants so look out for them and please be willing to encourage them in this way. St. John's is on the route, and we need people to man the church for one hour slots during the day.

If you can help, or would like more information, please speak to Ron McGiffie.

Accommodation required

Toby & Tamsin and children would like to come to the dedication of the extension, stay for the buffet and then come to church on the Sunday morning. Are you able to accommodate the family on the night of the 20th October? If so please contact Andrew Dean.

Donations for flood victims

The retiring offerings for the UK and Asia flood vitims have so far totalled £328 (£95 for the UK floods and £233 for the Asia floods). Any further donations can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew, in envelopes marked 'Asia Flood Appeal', 'UK Flood Appeal' or 'Both Flood Appeals'. Cheques should be made payable to St. John's PCC.

Joe Morris

Raymond is delighted to say that Joe will be joining us next Sunday, the 2nd September. He will continue to have treatment up until the end of October so he is not going to be working at full stretch just yet. However, he is keen to start. Joe has a lot to offer and it is a real and unexpected bonus to have him in the team.

Joe together with his parents, Kath and Chuck, will be moving to the vicarage in Ashton Keynes this week. Now that the building project is almost complete, it is wonderful that we are able to provide facilities for him to work and a room to talk with people here in church. We could not have done this last year. God's timing is perfect.

St John's giving scheme

Our Treasurer, Andrew, will shortly be preparing and issuing the weekly giving envelopes for 2008. If you are not already in the St. John's Giving Scheme and would like a set of envelopes, please speak to Andrew. He will also be happy to let you have information about giving to God's work at St. John's by Standing Order and Gift Aid.

Help! I need 67

Over the past few years the members of St John's have filled about 700 shoe boxes which have been sent to underprivileged children abroad. This year we would like to include, in every box we send, a toy bag that the children can keep long after the shoe box has disintegrated. If you can help make some bags (which are very simple - just two pieces of material approximately 10"x10" stitched round and with a drawstring cord at the top) then please have a word with Jean Dean and she will let you have some material.

Building project

Construction workersWith the building work complete, we are concentrating on planning the furnishing and equipping of the new extension. We have sufficient money in the fund to pay the builders and the architects with some left over to go towards the cost of furnishings and equipment, but we still need a lot more!

Gifts towards the cost can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew with cheques being made payable to St John's PCC. Additionally, you can help by filling phials which can be found in the basket in the church room. Already 84 have been returned containing a total of just over £558!

Dedication of the extension - early replies needed!

This will be on Saturday 20th October 2007. If you haven't already replied to your invitation then please do so as soon as possible so that we can plan and cater for the expected numbers. If you have any queries please speak to Jean Dean or Pauline Davis.

Transport

If you are coming to the Dedication of the extension and would like a lift, would you please sign the list in the church room. If you are able to offer transport to people requiring a lift there is an alternative list for adding your name to that, also in the church room.

Arc Angel Christian Bookshop

Oldi and Larissa, members of our 11:00 congregation, would like to invite you to the grand opening of Arc Angel Christian Bookshop on Saturday, 22nd September at 1:00pm at 45 Victoria Road, Swindon. Everyone is welcome and they would love to see you there.

Home groups in September

Raymond and the home group leaders have been looking at a new approach to home groups starting in the Autumn. Unfortunately, September is now one of our busiest holiday months at St. John's with many people taking the opportunity to go away once the children have returned to school. So, not much point starting a new initiative just then. September is going to be a month in which we focus on prayer. We want to learn about it, and of course also to do it.

Andrew Francis

Andew Francis, the Minister at Emmanuel Church, has not been well for some time but the diagnosis has proved more serious than anticipated. Andrew has two leaking heart valves and a heart muscle problem; he is at home, returning to hospital for tests which have to be spaced out. Once the tests are complete a decision will be made as to what heart surgery will be carried out.

We pray for Andrew and his family, and also the church at Emmanuel. Although there is no time set for Andrew's recovery, it is anticipated that he will be off work for some time.
