The Alpha Course
Bob has lead Alpha for a number of years but is not going to be able to do that this year as he is still recovering from his virus. That does not mean that there will be no Alpha. We have run at least one course every year since 1995 - often two - and this year will be no exception. We find that when we put on a course, people - often unexpectedly - turn up to go on it. Read more about Alpha.
Sharon wants you!
Sharon Mortimer is looking for some volunteers to go on the Sidesman's rota for the 11:00am service from September onwards. Please contact her if you can help.
Help! I need 100
Over the past few years the members of St John's have filled about 700 shoe boxes which have been sent to underprivileged children abroad. This year we would like to include, in every box we send, a toy bag that the children can keep long after the shoe box has disintegrated. If you can help make some bags (which are very simple - just two pieces of material approximately 10"x10" stitched round and with a drawstring cord at the top) then please have a word with Jean Dean and she will let you have some material. Please also have a look at the display in the church room as you leave church.
Rack, Shack and Benny
This will be the theme of the summer. It is the Veggie Tale story of Shadrach,
Meshach and Abednego and the burning fiery furnace. There will be a combined
children's group in the church room on those days when there is an adult
service taking place. A first-class team of volunteers have offered to
look after that group throughout the summer.
Lots of adults are Veggie Tale fans, and we will be looking at the adventures of Rack, Shack and Benny in the all-age services as well. This one is an absolute scream, with clever jokes, fantastic 3D pictures and some great songs that you will not be able to get out of your head all summer. It also gets the message across.
Chocolate tasting session: Rack, Shack and Benny is set in a chocolate factory - you'll find out why! We will be having a chocolate tasting session (for kids only!) next Sunday. Allergies are on the rise, so do please let us know if there are any children who are not able to eat chocolate and we will make some alternative arrangements to include them. Why are we doing a chocolate tasting session? You'll have to wait for the answer to that as well...
Building project
With
the building work complete, we are concentrating on planning the furnishing
and equipping of the new extension. We have sufficient money in the fund
to pay the builders and the architects with some left over to go towards
the cost of furnishings and equipment, but we still need a lot more!
Gifts towards the cost can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew with cheques being made payable to St John's PCC. Additionally, you can help by filling phials which can be found in the basket in the church room. Already 72 have been returned containing a total of just over £526!
Dedication of the extension
You should already have Saturday, 20 October 2007 in your diary for the Dedication of the Extension by Bishop Mike, followed by refreshments and entertainment. The service will start at 5:00pm. The church will be packed for this important occasion and attendance will be by invitation only. All members of St John's will be receiving personal invitations over the next couple of weeks. When you receive yours, please reply as quickly as possible so that we can plan and cater for the expected numbers.
Home groups in September
Lots of plans are coming together. They are still in the oven, baking, and very nearly ready to come out. Suffice it to say that there will be a new approach. We want to be adventurous in September and October and do some new things with prayer. With Joe coming, and the new building opening it is going to be an exciting autumn. We want prayer to be at the heart of it all.
Do you buy on line?
We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!
Tape Ministry
If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
