Church notice sheet - 24 June 2007

Make the most of the summer

We don't want to work our homegroups too hard in the summer. It is a good opportunity to take time off and to go for walks, pub meals, trips to the river etc.

A number of new members have joined us over the last few months. The summer is always a good time to get to know them, but even more importantly, they get to know us. Do please, individually or as groups, do your best to include those who have recently joined us.

Joe Morris

Joe had a great day in the parish last week, and met a number of people. After a meeting with the churchwardens, who were delighted to recommend him, Bishop Mike asked Raymond formally to offer the post of SSM to Joe. I am delighted to say that he has accepted and will be starting work in September.

Although Joe will be SSM, this is an official designation. Please regard him as the full-time curate of the parish of St John's Haydon Wick. His availability will be limited only by his treatment and by how well he feelds; his contract will be that of a full-time curate.

ArkJam in the Ark - feedback

An excellent debriefing session was had last week. We looked at every aspect of Jam in the Ark, made a number of decisions for next time, and gave ourselves a few things to consider over the summer.

Before next Jam, Raymond will be able to show clips from the DVD in our local schools to give children more of an idea of what happens.

Building project

Construction workersThe construction of the extension is now almost finished and it's looking great! The equally great news is that, thanks to the sacrificial and generous giving of so many people, we have sufficient money in the Building Project Fund to pay for the whole cost of the construction work and architect's fees, etc without having to borrow a penny!

Once the building work is completed we can start to equip and furnish the new rooms. Now we need furniture, equipment, carpets and curtains.

Having reached this stage after so much sacrifice and effort, we will want to make sure the rooms look as good as they possibly can so we will not be filling them with old filing cabinets and second hand chairs!

If you would like to contribute to the furnishings and equipping costs you can do so. Gifts can be passed to our treasurer, Andrew, and cheques should be made payable to St John's PCC.

Alternatively, you can help by filling phials for furnishings! Just take one of the little phials from the basket in the church room and fill it with your small change. Already 55 have been returned containing a total of £391!

We give glory to God for what has been achieved, and the extension will be dedicated by Bishop Mike, Bishop of Bristol during a service to be held at 5pm on Saturday 20 October, 2007. Please put this date in your diaries now.

After the service we will celebrate with a buffet meal and entertainment by some of the gifted members of St John's. Definitely an event not to be missed!

Small toys wanted

Out of the 10 playbags made and filled with small toys for our younger children to play with during the service, 4 have disappeared. Does anyone know where they are? We now need to make more and would appreciate any small toys and books (not noisy ones!) to restock them. Please contact Jean Dean if you can help - she will be delighted to hear from you.

Ugh!

If you had been in the church kitchen recently, that is the sound you would have heard from the two ladies who were cleaning drawers, cupboards & shelves. The kitchen is now clean and tidy thanks to their hard work. Would everyone who uses the kitchen please treat it with respect and clean it afterwards.

Do you buy on line?

We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.

There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!

Tape Ministry

If you or someone you know would like a recording of the service, please contact Nigel Crowhurst, our Tape Co-ordinator.
