Spirit 7 - Pentecost 2007

Spirit 7 is being celebrated in the Old Town gardens today, May 27. The timetable for the day will look like this:

You are welcome to arrive from 4:00pm and bring a picnic. Car parking will be a challenge, so we are encouraging folk to park in the Old Town car park and to walk along to the Town Gardens.

Bishop Evans Kisekka of Luweero in Uganda

Bishop Evans has been invited to the Lambeth conference next year. This is a worldwide gathering of all Anglican bishops. Last time he came to the Lambeth conference, he was able to visit St John's. That is where our commitment to Uganda began. Please pray for him that he will be able to come next year, and that our partnership with the church in that country may reach a whole new level.

Joe Morris

Joe is a theological student at Wycliffe Hall College in Oxford. He was due to be ordained at the beginning of July, and begin a ministry immediately afterwards, working as a curate in Stratton St Margaret. However, he has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and will be undertaking treatment in Oxford until September. For various reasons, his curacy at Stratton St Margaret could not be confirmed, and it looked as though he would not be able to be ordained (in order to be ordained, you need to be licensed to a particular church).

Bishop Mike rang Raymond a couple of weeks ago to ask if we could help in this situation, and whether there was a possibility that Joe could be attached to this church. Raymond has discussed this with the PCC, and is happy to say they were supportive of the idea.

Do please keep Joe in your prayers. He is 31 years old and this cancer has come very suddenly upon him. Please pray for his recovery, for the radiotherapy and chemotherapy he will be undergoing over the next few months and the operations to follow.

Building project

We are delighted to be able to say that not only do we have the money to pay for the entire building project, but we even have some money in hand to pay for furnishings. This is something to celebrate! Having reached this stage after so much effort and sacrifice, we want to make sure that the rooms look as good as they possibly can. We will not be filling them with beaten up filing cabinets or second-hand chairs. We took some time at the end of the last building project to make sure that the finished result was one we could be proud of, and we have never regretted it.

Please note that there is a formal celebration on 20 October when bishop Mike will be coming.

Building project - calling all outstanding pledges

We would like all outstanding pledges converted wholly or in part into gifts by the end of this month when the construction work will be completed. We are happy for pledges to be paid by installments. Cheques should be made payable to St John's PCC and passed to our treasurer, Andrew.

We will still need finance for furniture, equipment, carpets and curtains. You can help by filling phials for furnishings! Just take one of the phials from the basket in the church room and fill it with your small change. Already 43 have been returned containing a total of just over £321!

Fundraising BBQ

Rod and Sharon are holding a BBQ at their house on Saturday, 9 June at 7:00pm. This is to raise funds for the furnishings of the new annex. Tickets are £5.00 each, with 100% of ticket price going to the furnishing fund. Please see Rod or Sharon in church to buy your ticket(s).

Cotswold Wildlife Park

The pram club will be visiting the Cotswold Wildlife Park on Monday, 11 June, departing from St John's at 9:30am and we will leave for home at 2:00pm. It is possible that there will be seats available on the coach. If you would like to join us, the fee is £8 per adult (over 65s, £6), children 3-16 inclusive £5.50. If you are interested, please contact Lynda Gough from June 5 to see if seats are still available.

Do you buy on line?

We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.

There are over 100 retailers involved (including M&S, Amazon, John Lewis, Comet) some of which offer exclusive discounts and promotions - and best of all ... there is no extra cost to the purchaser!
