11:00am - 1 Kings 11:1-6 and Mark 12:22-29

Our Uganda Link

Frances David, who looks after our Uganda connection, will be coming to see us in July to update us on what is happening in Luweero. We are also expecting Bishop Evans Kisekka to join us next year after the Lambeth conference.

Meanwhile, in Kiwoko Hospital, malaria has put a severe strain upon the hospital staff this year. One very positive development is that a school for nurses attached to the hospital is now being developed under sponsorship from the European Union. This means new classrooms and an improved library for them. They are delighted. It is great to see specifically Christian enterprises being supported by the European Union in this way.

Lunch together

A few months ago, when Toby and Tamsin came to visit, they invited us to meet them for lunch at The Dockle Farmhouse. It was so enjoyable that a number of people suggested we do this on a more regular basis.

Therefore, on Sunday, May 20, after the 11:00am service, please make your way to that pub. Please do not feel that you have to be a long-standing member of the church to be part of this. In fact, if you are a relatively recent member of St John's, it would be a really good way for you to get to know everyone else.

Prayer circle

We as a Church believe in the power of prayer, and many of us can testify where this has been proven in our lives. If you feel that sharing your need for prayer with others may help, then please contact or prayer circle co-ordinators - Jean Dean or Edna Webb. The members of the circle will only know as much information as you wish them to. The wonderful thing is that God will know who and what is being prayed for.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

At St. John's Vestry and Annual Parochial Church Meetings on Monday evening, Raymond paid a glowing tribute to Howard Smith who is standing down as churchwarden after eight distinguished years in that office. Peter Howlett was re-elected, and Pauline Davis elected, as the two churchwardens for the coming year. Please pray for our churchwardens as they bear heavy responsibility in the exercise of their duties.

We want to thank Julie Hayward, Sharon Mortimer and Mary Southgate who have retired as elected members from PCC by rotation. At the APCM, Andrew Carpenter, Chris Hawkes, Lesley Hawkes and Rod Mortimer were elected to serve on PCC for the next three years. At the PCC meeting following the APCM, Andrew Carpenter was elected Lay Chair of PCC, Sharon Mortimer was elected as PCC Secretary, and Andrew Dean as PCC Treasurer.

The full PCC, including ex-officio and elected members, is Raymond Adams (Chair), Andrew Carpenter (Lay Chair), Pauline Davis and Peter Howlett (Churchwardens), Sharon Mortimer (Secretary), Andrew Dean (Treasurer), Jean Dean, Peter Eastwood, Peter Fletcher, Melanie Griffiths, Chris Hawkes, Lesley Hawkes, Rod Mortimer, Carol Nichol, Paul Nichol, and Mark Sansome. Please pray for the members of the PCC. The first full meeting of the new Council will be on Monday, 21 May 2007.

Report and Financial Statements for 2006

If you missed the APCM and would like to see have a copy of the Report and Accounts (which were unanimously approved and adopted by the meeting) you can pick up a copy from the table in the church room.

Building project - calling all outstanding pledges

Construction workersWe would like all outstanding pledges converted into gifts by the time the work is completed in about three weeks time.

When the construction work is completed, we will need furniture, equipment, carpets and curtains. You can help by filling phials for furnishings! Just take one of the phials from the basket in the church room and fill it with your small change. Already 33 have been returned containing a total of just over £271!

Spirit 7 - Pentecost 2007

Spirit 7 is being celebrated in the Old Town gardens on May 27. The timetable for the day will look like this:

You are welcome to arrive from 4:00pm and bring a picnic. Car parking will be a challenge, so we are encouraging folk to park in the Old Town car park and to walk along to the Town Gardens.

Do you buy on line?

We have received our first commission cheque amounting to more than £50! Log on via our website or go directly to http://www.buy.at/StjohnsHW. The church will receive commission from 2% to 12% on anything you purchase.
