Weddings, baptisms & funerals
Weddings
Although St John's is a modern church building (built only 20 years ago) a number of couples were married there even before it became a parish church.
The modern décor, comfortable seating, superb visibility and excellent acoustics make it a marvellous venue for an intimate and meaningful marriage service. Registration at the end of the service takes place not in a vestry (as in many churches) but in full view of the whole congregation.
St John's can accommodate over 200 people so it is big enough for most weddings! If you are planning to get married, and want to do so in your Parish Church, please contact us.
Baptisms
It is always a joyful occasion when a child is baptised into the family of God at St John's. But baptism is not just for babies. It is not unusual to see adults undergoing baptism in our church as well. People who have discovered faith in Christ, often want to acknowledge their new faith in baptism. Faith is at the very heart of baptism.
In the baptism service we ask parents and godparents to affirm their own faith in Christ, and to promise to bring up their child within the family of the church.
For those who feel unable to go that far but want to thank God for the birth of their child, we offer a service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a child. We always welcome requests for such services and encourage families to come and share in our worship. For those who want to dedicate their child to Christ and welcome him/her into the fellowship of believers, but who do not wish to baptise their child, we offer a service of Dedication.

Funerals
The church is there to support people in the sad times of life as well as the good and happy times. Sad times can lead to new beginnings for those who lose loved ones and have to adjust to a new way of life.
The ministerial team visit the bereaved and conduct funeral services in St. John's church, and in the chapels at Kingsdown and Whitworth Road, for anyone in the parish who would like a Christian service.
