Weddings, baptisms & funerals

Weddings

Most people prefer to marry in an ancient church building. We're never going to compete with that. Nevertheless, the comfortable seating, superb visibility and excellent acoustics make St John's an excellent venue for an intimate and meaningful marriage service.

St John's can accommodate over 200 people so it is big enough for most weddings! If you are planning to get married, and want to do so in your Parish Church, please contact us.

Baptisms

It is always a joyful occasion when a child is baptised into the family of God at St John's. But baptism is not just about the baby. It is first of all about parents and their faith. After all, it is the parents who will be saying, "I submit to Christ as Lord" not just on behalf of their baby, but for themselves.

For those who feel unable to go that far but want to thank God for the birth of their child, we offer a service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a child.

We always welcome requests for such services. It allows parents to come to church, to give thanks to God for their child and see their child prayed for and blessed. And we were never ask you to make promises that you don't feel that you would be able to keep.

Funerals

The church is there to support people in the sad times of life as well as the happy ones. The ministerial team visit the bereaved and conduct funeral services in St. John's church, and in the chapels at Kingsdown crematorium and Whitworth Road, for anyone in the parish who would like a Christian service.
