What did we do in Uganda?
Here are just some of the highlights:
We met the Rev William Kiwanuka and gave him our customary gift from this congregation for the education of his children. In addition we handed over extra money which you gave last year in order to support the two orphans he has also adopted. His son James has now finished his education and is working with the Bosoga Water Trust in their office in Luweero.
We visited the school at William's new parish at Kibiri, and handed a letter over from Mrs Prichard of Greenmeadow School inviting the school to form a partnership as part of the International Schools Award. Their headteacher was delighted.
We visited the Bishop Asili Health Centre in Luweero which we have supported for many years. This Roman Catholic organisation is run by nuns who do an unbelievably difficult task with boundless compassion and determination. They had received no drugs from the government since 2006, and are entirely supported by gifts. We were able to make a generous donation to them.
We went to a service in the church at Balitta where Raymond preached and baptised three children. Afterwards we met a number of women and two children living with AIDS.
We visited the school we have built at Bwaziba and were met by a senior official from the government who made plain his delight with all we have done. Such is the pride of the people of the area in that school that the parents have donated 10,000 bricks in order to extend it and the local farmers provided an additional 10,000 bricks even though they have nothing to do with the school. This is remarkable example of the community working together. Work had however stopped because there was no money to buy cement. Our £1,700 gift will make sure that work continues.
The partnership was further extended by letters given and received between Mr Simon Cowley, headteacher of Haydon Wick School, and the Head Teacher at Bwaziba.
We visited the Blind Centre and were entertained by the children, played games with them, and watched them work. We met Blind William, the carmaker, who had a scar on his face following an encounter with a large cow. Many animals were wandering loose and were a very real danger to the children. We were able to use the money we took it to build a fence around the school to make sure such things will not happen again. Canon Eridard Nsubuga will be looking after that for us.
Chris took his video camera everywhere and aims to make the DVD. We will show that in church on the big screen first of all, so that you get the chance to see with your own eyes the work we are supporting in Uganda. We will announce that date as soon as we can.
