Bulding project
Phase
1: St. John's was built twenty-five years ago. As modern churches
go, the building is very attractive, both inside and out.
However, the wonderful roof which makes it such a striking building had a major drawback. Inside that ceiling we found that every sound echoed and re-echoed. It was a bit like worshipping in a swimming pool.
We did extensive reordering in 1993. Then came chairs, then a balcony, then a dias.
In 2005 we decided it was time to extend the building and create extra rooms. That project turned out to be twice as expensive as we had first expected.
Phase 2: In 2009 we started work on a new kitchen and lounge. We found that there was a lot of extra space, and someone had the bright idea of starting the Rock Cafe initially as an experiment, just to see if it would take off. It did.
Phase 3: Finally, in 2011, we managed to complete the last part of our building - the toilets. When we brought them up to the same level as the rest of the plant, our twenty-year building programme finally came to an end.
We have no plans at present to do anything else with the building. Unless someone comes up with another idea!
Living stones
Wonderful though the development of the building has been, we continue to remind ourselves that it is only a building. We concentrate on the other building mentioned in the New Testament - the one that is made up of Living Stones.
Living water
Jesus says, "Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water."
The Holy Spirit is central to the life of this church and indeed every church. If He is not central, we end up with a dry river-bed, where water once flowed, but flows no longer.
The two banners at the front of the church emphasise two things: our dependence on the Holy Spirit and the fact that each member is a crucial part of God's building. Or – as we probably ought to say, a crucial part, of his building project, because it is not yet complete.
